We stayed near the Spanish Steps when we visited. That is a decent location as you can get to most attractions by foot in less than 30 min.

Some of the things we did on our trip:
Papal Mass at St Peter's Basilica (highlight of the trip)
Mass at St Johns Lateran
Guided tour Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museum
Guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica (did not go to top of dome...heard that is awesome)
Toured Colliseum
Visited Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navonna
Spent a day in Pompeii touring the ruins
Ate some great lunches and dinners

Wish I would have brought some jogging gear to run the streets of Rome in the morning...

That's awesome.

Who is your favorite historical figure from ancient Roman military history?

In all seriousness, hit the highlights in Rome and go to much better places such as Florence.

hop down to Naples and take a ferry to the island of Capri. Climb to the top.

Must sees:
Colliseum
Pantheon
Forum

If you're catholic and/or love art: see the Vatican. Otherwise, it may not be worth your time to wait in line.

Watch out for gypsies. Remember, Rome is seedy and dirty, like Mexico with less Cartel action. The Pantheon is a great area to hang out during the day. Try to adopt to the Roman schedule to have more fun:
Wake up around 8:00am and eat light (pastry, fruit, cheese, or crepes)
Eat a light lunch (sandwich, pasta, or some pizza) then take a long nap
Snack around 4:00
Go out and get shitfaced on wine at dinner around 10:00pm and spend the rest of the night dancing and eating more.

Also August is great because the tourist lines are not very long. Most travel sites say italians go on Vacation around August, but Rome and Florence and Venice are all huge cities so the Tourism industry and sites are open all year.

August is the worst time to go to Rome.

Everything is closed and it's hot as h-e-l-l.

Highly recommend the hop on hop off buses. It's basically a 10 dollar cab to drive around the city. You can hop off when you want and see what you want. Every ten minutes a new bus passes and you can hop on whenever!

My goal is to fly into Rome, hang for a day then head to Florence. However, time is an obstacle and this is a condensed trip with only 5 nights.

Sounds like a solid plan. I went to Florence and Rome. Florence is much better than Rome, imo. My favorite cities were Naples and Capri.

My preference would be Florence and one day go to Wine country. Still deciding what our best options are.

Well, Tuscany is between Rome and Florence. Five nights in Italy is tough. I spent 13 nights last time and it wasn't enough. We're doing 15 nights next May and June.

With your limited time I'd do two nights in Rome with a late afternoon train to Florence and three nights in Florence. You can do the Coliseum tour in Rome and a Vatican tour or do the bus thing one afternoon and visit different sites. In Florence you could do the Uffizi Gallery one day and the Galleria dell'Accademia the next day to see David. That will leave plenty of time to explore the city those two days. On the third day you could do a wine tour from Florence. Not the best way to see Tuscany but it would give you a taste.

Do you arrive from the US on the first day? If so, it's probably a rest day mostly.

This. Tours are limited and a lot of the better restaurants are closed for the month. September is a much better choice.

We would land the next morning. So fly out the evening in US and land the next morning in Rome. I think i will have to suck it up and just start that day.

yes, do not nap or you will lose the entire day if you oversleep. Just power through until evening.

On the first day, I would avoid riding a hop on/off tour bus as it will probably put you to sleep. Hit the ground running.

If you are near the Pantheon, this is about 250 yards away and had great local food.

I would spend 3 days in Rome, 2 in Florence. Lot more to see in Rome. Both are great.

Not an expert but had an awesome week there 2 years ago. I highly recommend a company called Walks of Italy for booking any of the personal guided tours. Yeah it is a little more expensive but not all that much and with the guided tours you get to skip the lines and go right in which you will definitely appreciate at the Vatican and the Coliseum for sure. The guy that owns the company is from Lafayette and actually splits residency. The lines at the Vatican are ridiculous!! I am not a religious person at all but I thoroughly enjoyed the Vatican and highly recommend it for the learning experience and you can't go to Rome without seeing the Sistine Chapel. I loved everything about the city and had an incredible time there and can't wait to go back again. We got an apartment/flat from Homeaway or VRBO right down from the Coliseum and saved a ton versus the hotels. Enjoy!!

Good recommendation. We used Walks of Italy and Viator for most of our tours and they were good. They were too long but that's what you get. A three hour tour. They both offer the skip the lines option.
