No it isn't. Many shops move down to riverfront on the Tiber. All the museums and ruins, tons of restaurants, river front bars are still open and fun.
Also, I'm from Columbia, nothing is hot as hell compared to home. It may get to 90, but the humidity is close to 0
ETA: Don't eat at places where the menu is in pictures.

Lived in Sicily for two years, driving over there can be terrifying, what's worse though is coming back to the US and trying to drive like an Italian.

Umm, The city of Florence is located in the region of Tuscany.
The north side yes. The wine region however is south of Tuscany between Rome and Florence. At least most of it is. Bad wording on my part but I'd think that you comprehended what I was getting at.

I lived in Rome for a couple months.
Piazza Navona
Campo di Fiori
There's really no need to go to the Spanish steps
Look to see if there still doing reservations to Trevi Fountain
If you can, stay in Trastevere. It's a really young part of the city with lots of bars and restaurants
If you're looking for clubs, Via Testaccio is probably where you want go
Pantheon
Colliseum of course

Trevi Fountain was (is still?) under major renovations in September.

Trevi Fountain is fine now. No renovations taking place.

Do he Dark Rome Coleseum night tour. Very cool and no crowds. Anywhere in center city is close to everything.

Was there in November, Trevi was just done.
ISIS helped tremendously for photos with keeping people too afraid to go around the usual historical places, especially at night.

Looking to travel to Rome in the summer. We want to stay near the center of the attractions, possibly close to the Spanish Steps or somewhere within walking distance of good spots
My experience in Rome=
1 day= Roman Colosseum & The republic (the tickets are a combined it is under $20 to see both) don't pay for any tour
2 day- Vatican City- they have their own post office, females must me dressed.
If you want to see the Sistine Chapel, it will take 3-4 hours. That said that was most impressive worth of art I've seen, ever!
3=Trevi

Download the Rick Steve app for walking tours so you know what you're looking at. Like the Roman forums.
You'll need at least 3 days to see everything. Vatican City is a day in its own.
