I'm having a hard time understanding why pharmacies filling doctors prescriptions are liable in this case. Unlike some countries, pharmacies here don't have the power to prescribe drugs. They can only fill prescriptions from a doctor.

Pharmacy giant Rite Aid, which is facing an onslaught of lawsuits over its alleged role in the opioid epidemic, is planning to file for bankruptcy protection, according to a report.

The company's multibillion-dollar debt load and pending legal allegations that it oversupplied prescription painkillers, will be covered under the Chapter 11 filing, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

should file this suit along with Chicago's mayor suing auto manufacturers for car thefts in the city

They are also suing the drug wholesale companies, who supply the pharmacies. They have even less culpability, and are three steps removed from the patient, yet are being sued for billions.

I think in LA a pharmacist can refuse a prescription refill if they have a valid concern. That is probably what also gives them liability in this case.

Yeah, it all starts with the bad docs. I’ve seen a few get charged but not many.

They are all gone here to my knowledge. Walgreens took most of their locations over or they just shut down.

They’re being sued because that’s where the moneys at. Attorneys will shake out a settlement, and move on to the next victim.

Pretty sure It has to do with pharmacists filling prescriptions they shouldn’t. If they know doctors are way overprescribing to junkies, they shouldn’t be filling the scrips. Now, why pharmacists are responsible for these junkies and not their doctors, that I don’t know.

If you see a patient doctor hopping for pills and constantly coming to refill because their auntie spilled the last 10 days worth of a 30 script, as a pharmacist you're supposed to do something about it. The big chains especially had a role in this process, they didn't expect their employees to do anything or even prevent it; even sometimes coached them to do nothing. I don't think their level of culpability is as high as what juries have found but they are not innocent.

don't know about corporations but individuals don't get immunity from judgements by filing bankruptcy

I imagine the lawsuits are about the lack of quality control for filling multiple bottles from a single script or persons getting multiple scripts and filling them all at Rite Aid. It was big business here back in the early 00s in TX where they had lax regulations on the pharmacies communicating. I think Florida had the same regulatory issues, too.

Meanwhile, the opioid epidemic continues via black market distribution. So, the people that need these types of drugs no longer have access even if they can responsibly manage use.

Not unlike a bartender being legally liable for a stupid drunk killing someone with his car. Not all laws are good.

Unlike a bartender, a pharmacist is a licensed professional.

Some of the pharmaceutical makes are liable when they made and marketed narcotics and marketing them as "non-addictive" to doctors.

If they are filing for bankruptcy with the intent to completely shutdown (don't recall which bankruptcy that is), there is nothing to go after. Executives & Shareholders are protected as they are a C-Corp, and the business will be gone, so no future revenues. They can then get in line with the other creditors when they sell their assets.
