So my upstairs AC has a big leak and we called out someone to get it fixed. We have to replace the upstairs unit (house is only 8 years old). The estimate came back at $5,000. The house is approximately 2,700 sq ft (yea, I'm OT poor). The upstairs is about 1,400 sq ft.

Am I crazy in thinking the estimate is extremely excessive?

no in fact that sounds a little on the low side...may want to step up the seer rating and get one more efficient.

Depends. What is the make, size and SEER of the unit?

Not at all. I just got an 8k quote for a 1,200 square foot house. Now THAT is excessive.

Carrier Comfort rated system 2.5 ton 16 SEER cooling w/ 70k BTU gas furnace 85% AFUE rated.

No idea what any of that means.

By the way, your responses are making me depressed.

That sounds like a fair price to me. The last one I installed was a 3 ton 13 seer for right at 5K.

Get two more quotes from different contractors and see how they compare.

That's a very fair price for a 16 seer.

Be very careful when price shopping HVAC systems. I've been in this business for 20+ years. Contractors are like chefs. We have to assemble various components but the actual install is the most important part. Be wary of the cheapest price. These guys usually don't have insurance and I have seen some real disasters.

That said, 5K for that system is a fair price in Atlanta. Good luck.

That seems spot on for that system.

What kind of POS system did you have in there that needs to be totally replaced after only 8 years?

You are getting everything replaced? If so that seems low. What seer rating? For 1400sqft I'd say anywhere between 7-9k for a decent unit

I replaced two units in March, both 2.5 ton 14 seer. Cost me $8600 for both installed. Trane if that matters. I had quotes from $8300 to $11,500 for a Carrier.

Builder installed POS. However, the first floor unit is in good condition.

Understood.

Seems like even really low-end stuff lasts 10 years.

I'd probably go a full 3 ton as it's going to catch the brunt of the heat. Personally I'd drop the gas furnace and go electric heat for what I assume are upstairs bedrooms. If you're on a budget skip carrier or trane. I'd go goodman all day long and save yourself some money.

And where is this big leak? If the unit is only 8 years old it may be worth replacing the coil or whatever is leaking vs doing a swap out.

It's high. Get the unit here LINK

Pay someone to install. It will be half the cost.

The cost to replace the coil is $1500 and no guarantees. This comes with a 10 year warranty and service checks for 2 years.

Depends on where you are, probably, and certainly what brand they are installing. I just had a 3.5 ton 14 SEER unit and gas furnace installed for 4600.
