Refilling 1 lb propane bottle from 20 lb tank

I read a tip about putting the 1 lb bottles in the freezer before filing (it enables more propane to enter the bottle - due to temp difference between the two). Be careful if you do this, I filled 5 1 lb bottles getting ready for this upcoming cold snap, 4 of them swelled up so much I had to discard them.

You gotta heat the valve with a flame, dummy.

Use a scale next time. Putting them in the freezer is just to make it go faster, while being careful not to overfill.

That trick is dangerous for exactly the reason you discovered. It would work if you kept the bottles in cool storage.

Use a lit match by the valve to see if the tank is full*.
*Do NOT do this.

I laughed way too hard at this.
Also don’t freeze the bottles just get them colder than your twenty lb bottle. I’ve forgotten and left one hooked up all night before and once it equalizes it’s not going to fill up any more. Never had any fear of one exploding.

As long as they are rated for same pressure you should be good.

I've done it before with no problem, but these swelled up. Didn't explode or anything (may be fine?), but to the point I'd rather discard them.

Turkeys can be thawed quickly in hot oil too

I refill mine all the time, but never stick them in a freezer, fridge, etc
Get a digital scale.
Weigh one full, then weigh empty.
From my notes the typical one pound bottles full weighs
Flip the big propane tank upside down when filling.

Are you sure they actually swelled up? The plastic base is covering up the rounded bottom of the cylinder so it’s able to stand up, is that what you’re seeing? I’ve done this a lot, and never had an issue. Like somebody else said, the pressure is going to stabilize once it’s full.

From what I recall when I looked into this, unless it is an approved refillable tank, it is illegal to transport those on the road.

I’d worry less about maximum volume and more about not blowing your face off.

And how exactly would one figure out that you refilled it... unless it's busting at the seams like the OPs?

I have no clue, that would be a DA’s job and Plaintiff lawyer’s job when you accidentally nuke someone in a car wreck. Just relaying the info when I thought paying $3 for a new bottle was too expensive. I decided against being cheap. DOTD and OSHA Regs apply if not others.
Info from a camping website below:
————————-
If you ever read the label on these bottles you will see that it says “Do not refill this bottle,” and “Do not transport refilled bottles.” Subject to $500,000 in fines and 5 years imprisonment.
I don’t believe the propane police are out hunting you down, but if an accident did happen and the tank was to blame, you could be in some serious trouble.
