How does that look, though? Has the glue held up? I've been giving rubber soles more weight in my decision for durability concerns.

These are the AE Soles (of yesteryear sadly)

I always got the tempest. Last pair I had refurbished I got the double leather sole and it has lasted a long time. Something you can look at if leather soles are important.

Loved the tempest sole. It's what the Secret Service guys put on their soles

From the side, it looks like a leather sole. From the bottom, who cares. I think I know what you're saying, though. Some rubber sole dress shoes can tend to look like clunky orthopedic retard shoes. These don't.

Is there a way to custom order a shoe to swap out the sole (or just add a rubber patch like the below pic) or will I need to go to a repair shop for that? I don't see anything on the websites indicating that I can choose a different sole option.

yeah, I'm staying away from those.

Does yours look like the pic I just posted? I'd be good with that and will be able to end my shopping.

Yeah call up AE and you can put whatever sole you want on a brand new pair of their shoes. I think there is a $35 fee

Oxfords, not loafers. Sorry, missed that part of the OP.

Really just wanted an opportunity to brag about my giant feet.

As someone said, you can find a cobbler and just get them resoled.

But if you want something new anyway I second the Bruno Magli recommendation. They're great, and besides OJ Simpson wore them so they are

I'm getting my Waldens re-soled with the "v-tread" sole. The leather went way too quick on those.

I wear Josef Seibel shoes. Reasonably fashionable, and unbelievably comfortable.
