Recently found out I am 1/16th Cherokee Indian

My mother recently learned her Great-Grandmother was Cherokee Indian. She had always thought it but there was no proof until her uncle passed away a few weeks ago. They found some documents in his possessions.

Anyone here know how I would go about getting this documented with the tribe, etc?

I also learned there is Cherokee on my father's side of the family, but no exact evidence or easily traceable because the family was dirt poor, West Virginia coal miners. So I am actually more than 1/16th, but can only trace the 1/16th with documents.
