Recently I've had a lot of trouble keeping the conversation alive with my friends, new and old. I don't know what's going on with me and it's starting to get to me mentally. I don't have terrible social skills, at least I don't think I do.

I use to be able to ramble on about a lot of topics other than just sports and personal things. A lot of times people will tell me their opinion on things and I'll reply with a simple yea and completely run the conversation in the ground.

What are good ways to keep conversations going without dominating the conversation because I'm not that type of person but I like talking to people in general.

A lot of the times I have trouble keeping group discussion going in particular. I can talk to someone one-on-one for days but when I get in group conversation I tend to go quiet or favor a certain person in the group. I use to not be this way but in the last couple of months I've found myself really pissing people off in group conversations by running the talk into the ground and being the awkward guy to be around. It hasn't always been this way. I don't know what the frick is going on with me but I try to put in effort in group conversations but a lot of the time I go blank or I just flat out don't know what to say. I speak out of turn, interrupt, and sometimes I'm just all up in my head.

What can I do to turn things around? Specifically in group settings of 3 or more.

Maybe you're boring people? I know I became bored with this topic about two sentences in and stopped listening to what you were saying.

I know it's long but I don't do that type of thing in a face to face setting in groups. Short blurt outs or just plane ole silence.

Me and my good buddies usually just text each other obscene pictures and messages, we barely ever actually talk unless it's to call one another gay.

I was the same way and then I just started eating a lot of pain killers. Eventually you become an addict and get to take methadone which is basically just a legal high. It will make you a God of sex as well. So I just fixed all your problems you just have to be willing to become a drug addict

Find common ground
Let them/get them to talk about themselves
Remember that conversations aren't one sided
You sound ADHD as hell

Why feel the need to respond all the time. I'm introverted and find it more entertaining in larger groups just to be a fly on the wall and listen. I also play this game with myself to figure out the side of a topic the group takes and I'll formulate the opposite opinion just to stir up some debate. It doesn't have to be serious and you have fun with it with a wink to the group. Once the pressure is off just be your self. Don't feel the need to talk.

Yup. Anti depressants suck though. Your options are benzos, opiates, dieing this way.

Thanks for the advice. I've just found myself so uptight lately. I guess it's been a lot of anxiety or something. I have plenty of old friends that have noticed and I'm letting a lot of shite get to me

Seriously, you are depressed. Go to a doctor and get put on benzos but don't take them long term if you can help it.

You should look at your own butthole in the mirror. It's a life changing experience.

The problem is I don't talk enough. It's starting to piss people off that I'm a fly on the wall and I don't have anything to say. I probably am depressed but I refuse to go see a doctor because that's not how I was raised. It was always if you have a problem fix it growing up but this it's driving me fricking insane.

You really shouldn't choose this situation as the one where you are going to be stubborn. I was joking above but you can get an addiction to a lot worse things than Ativan or Klonopon trying to ease this feeling, or it may get progressively worse to the point of suicide or something else awful. Depression is nothing to mess around with, SSRIs are shitty useless medicines but benzos are relatively harmless and have a low addiction profile compared to other drugs (as long as you don't take Xanax, or some other less popular benzos that a doctor is unlikely to prescribe). I would go to the doctor immediately and get put on a very small dose of Ativan or Klonopin and just take it as needed and say goodbye to this problem. If you really don't want to risk addiction just get a prescription for gabbapentin.

Ask questions. That keeps people talking, and gives you new material to talk about

It sounds like depression to me. I've been there.

A medical doctor should be able to help.

I don't know why people fear xanax so much. It's quick working, doesn't last long, and taken as prescribed, not many side effects. If you take .5mg or break it in half and only take it in certain situations it can be a great drug. If you get drunk on it or take it all day long, then it can go bad quickly. Xanax is really not that big a deal if used properly.

ETA: I copied and pasted wrong part
