Long story short got in a football accident at 17 and it led to one disc being herniated and the other bulging..went through a year of intense pain at only 17 years old and finally got surgery to remove a bit of bone to relieve the pain and I've been fine ever since

I am now 24 and was picking up something the other day and think I blew out something in my back..not sure if it a herniated or bulging disc again but the pain at scale of 1-10 is about 5, so more nagging but it's been 2 weeks of this and no relief

Are there any stretches I can do to relieve the area? Does it sound like a herniated disc to anyone? Or just somebody familiar with this condition..would hate to have 2 very invasive back surgeries before 25

Have you ever tried spinal decompression? I had it done after a bad car accident and it helped out a lot. I have a client that deals with chronic back pain and he said it helped him tremendously.

What was the surgery? It does not sound like a laminectomy (which removes the intruding disc, not bone). It sounds like the disc is still impinging the nerve, where exactly does the pain radiate? through the buttock outter hammie side of the calf and top of the foot? Give some specifics..

Best exercises you can do are for the core, strengthen your abs and back, lay on the floor and push your chest up rolling you back at the same time to force up the chest. do not do sit ups.. you want to maintain a natural curvature as best you can.

Good luck dude, been there and it sucks. But it gets better.

FWIW Dr. Eiserloh at BR Orthopedic did my surgery and I highly recommend him

Try an inversion table. I have a Teeter one. I have some lower back pain and it really helps.

Pressups - the best back exercise to do -
Check if out -
Also - don't discount about 15 sessions with a physical therapist...I was a skeptic but it saved me from surgery and losing my single digit handicap !

I'm not sure exactly..I should know but was 17 and can't remember. All i know is that the surgeon took out a piece of bone to give some room for the nerve to pass through or something like that..it goes through the right buttock pretty deep and through my leg down across my shin to the top of my foot, very painful

So far no relief and seems to be getting worse..puts me in a really bad mood and i hate it. Gonna try some exercises but hope my range of motion doesn't start to go down and i start to become really stiff in my leg--that's what happened the last time

thanks for the response

Sounds like the L5-S1 level. See your doc, get an MRI and work like hell in therapy. Good luck man!

Added: Goes without saying but be careful with pain killers. Because I had to do therapy, then nerve injections and finally surgery, it took a year from start to finish. I could have easily gotten hooked on pills has I not been warned and coached before and throughout.

Find a reputable neurosurgeon that specializes in spine. Have a MRI handy bc if you dont you wont get an apt. To get an MRI just go see any pain management clinic that specializes in therapy and injections, skip the injection, take your film and go see a neurosurgeon. Now the neuro may have you get an injection at first, but thats their protocol if he thinks thats all you need, at least he will have your file and know your history.

Treatment, rest and meds first which it sounds like you have already done then MRI and injections if necessary, surgery is always last

I am dealing with the same thing, man. L4-S1 injured at the gym 2 years ago. Re-injured them about a month ago and the shite sucks. I couldn't stand upright and every position I was in was painful. I went to an urgent care clinic, got x-rayed, next day MRI and got a consult to see a neuro. Get an MRI and see a neuro is probably your next step doctor-wise.

Spinal cord stimulation. Medtronic is the only company with MRI capability. Look into it

Since you are in Diamondhead, may seek a consult with Dr. Gustav Gutnisky in Slidell. Done my micro-discectomy in 2010 and I have been 99% better. Good luck to ya,that kind of pain sucks man.

I've had 2 similar surgeries, part of my disc removed in the first one, and a more invasive surgery the second time to remove bone fragments that they didn't see the first go-around. I have a build up of scar tissue from the surgeries and I experience pain for a few days after doing anything really strenuous, so that may be the case with you. You should go back and see your neurosurgeon, it may take another MRI but at least you'll know what's going on. Hope you have a full recovery, back pain and the shooting pains down your legs are things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy

If it's been going on for that long, I'd hope for a discectomy/fusion. That's what they eventually did for me & I feel like a new person, even though the lead-up to the surgery & the recovery was pretty long. This was cervical, though.
