I have a 2017 Honda Civic with R-1234YF refrigerant. Been driving this car for 7 years and AC has never worked consistently. Had to fix it 3 times. I am thinking about selling my car and buying a new or fixing (quoted $5,0000 at dealership). Anyone recommend what the best option? I think a new car will have these issues later on if they use this new eco friendly refrigerant.

Get a Toyota and don’t worry about it

Get a quote from a reputable independent repair shop. It will likely be much, much less than the dealer and come with an equivalent warranty.

Honda’s have had A/C issues for decades. Great vehicles, but their A/C problems have always been their Achilles.

I work at a dealership…..that does seem pretty high. I would certainly get someone else to give me a quote. 1234 doesn’t cause problem and isn’t worse than 134. It’s just REALLY expensive. I’d be curious to know what they are replacing for 5k.

I have same refrigerant and had to replace condenser and compressor in a Yukon Denali. Cost 1800 with a test using refrigerant, parts, and refill of refrigerant. 5000 is super high

It was at highland car care since you’re in BR

I had my A/C compressor changed and recharged for 700.00 about two years ago. That sounds really high. Sorry you are having trouble. It is a terrible time to have A/C problems

That’s absurd. Throwing parts at the problem. That sounds like they don’t want to do the work and gave you a “go away” quote.

Remember that even dealerships have a hard time keeping qualified mechanics on staff.

Nothing is wrong with 1234YF other than it’s expensive. Your issue is with Honda. The 16 - 18s have AC issues. There is also an AC recall on them so you may need to check in to that.

Yeah Honda had some warranty for the compressor and condenser I believe. They changed out the parts and 2 weeks later was blowing warm again. They later stated I need to change the whole part for 5 grand. I'll take it into a local mechanic to see

They have no idea what the issue is.

Did they do a leak test? Is the new condenser leaking already? Did they damage it during the install?

Yea they said the refrigerant is full. I think they said it was clogged or some shite. I am about to take it to a local shop. I am going to see if they will just convert to R-134a.

That's too expensive. AC is a closed system that is not very complicated and any good repair shop should be able to diagnose your problem. The dealer probably wants you to sell so they can resell it at $10K. Try AGCO in BR on Coursey for the AC check.
