Got into a conversation with a friend who claims that the oil change chains like Speedy, Take 5, etc, use inferior oil and oil filters. What says the OT?

Sounds probable but does that mean any company that uses generic instead of name brand is a scam?

I'd think the oil and filters are to spec, I think the scams come in with all of the add ons. You need an air filter, coolant flush, wipers...

I haven't changed my own oil 15 years. I've had multiple cars/ trucks and all were going strong with well over 100k miles when I sold them. My last Tundra had 260k and my current one has 130k with no issues whatsoever. I know I'm paying a premium to not have to bother with it so I'd say it's definitely not a scam.

I don't know how they can drain oil in 5 minutes, do they pump it out? My truck takes a lot longer than 5 minutes.

They are inferior in the sense that you will get the rated miles out of them and nothing more. So if you are religious about oil changes you should have no problems. If you find yourself busy and missing a date here and there, look out.

The scam part isn't the oil and filters. Its the "this needs to be replaced"

They pretty much tell you about 5 things that need to be replaced every single time you go in.

Even if you have a brand new car.

If it was up to them, they would replace your wipers after each rain.

Most oil filters are made by one of 2 or 3 companies and just have different names on them. And they all have options when it comes to oil

I use 5 minute oil change all the time.... not a scam, all their products are legit

However...

It takes longer than 5 mins... more like 10-15... and as other posters have said, they will try to get you to buy new air filters and wipers and other shite you don't need... just say no and that's the end of it

I think their pricing is bullshite. They advertise a $29.99 oil change but the fine print says it only covers 4 quarts of oil. Every time I go, I walk out paying $60-$70.

The only scam is trying to charge you $50 to change wipers.

I have a buddy that worked at a dodge dealership changing oil in the late 90s. He said the dodge neon oil filter was so hard to get to that they never changed the filters when they serviced them.

Same here... but I take 5 quarts and I get mid-grade synthetic blend... GTX or something similar... good for 5k miles or better

What is your point? I had a honda accord that I changed the oil twice. Yes twice. I sold it with 190,000 miles. The only issue I ever had besides tires and battery was the AC went out

If I'm paying $100-150 for an oil change I bring it to an actual shop, not one of those quick places. I'll go out of my way and wait to have everything done right.

I don't bring it to those places. I brought it to a shop here in Alexandria VA. I insisted on Mobil1 but I have a high performance vehicle. I don't trust the drum oil.

Nah. They just try to push more expensive oil on you...and other addons to the service.
