Don't do it. My family lasted about 3 months and went back. You don't save much money, after subscriptions and faster web speeds.

Uh.....? My gf has the preferred internet package(25Mbps) at like $45/mo. Free OTA, she's on my Netflix acct, and doesn't pay for huluplus

Before she dropped cable, her bill was ~$135/mo. That's a little more than $1000/yr savings, and on a student's budget, that is pretty significant

Eta: If I lived there, she could ditch the internet all together because I can tether my phone as a hotspot and get 50Mbps

I have 7, so AppleTVs and Rokus all over the place don't make sense.

Sure it does. They aren't that expensive and the one-time cost will be a wash within a year.

Does anyone know if by using XBMC on Apple TV you can get all the regular channels + most sporting channels?

My main ones are:

Science channel
Discovery
CBS/ABC/NBC local news channels
ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPNU
NFL Network

XBMC won't give you local TV channels. You should be good to go with the rest.

We already had fast enough internet speeds from Eatel. Had Directv for cable because I got things on there I didn't get from Eatel's cable packages.

We went from paying almost $100 extra a month for DirecTV to having a subscription to Netflix and Hulu Plus, each costing about 8 bucks.

installing XBMC on it.

You must jailbreak the Apple TV to be able to install XBMC on it which IMO makes the Apple TV worth while

doesnt work with current appletv and only supports 720p.

not exactly a category killer yet on apple

Do you install plugins on XMBC on the apple tv as well?

I am seriously considering going the jailbreaking route. I am not uber savvy on that stuff...

make sure you have the right appletv (v2 i think..the black one) or else you cant put xbmc on it even if jailbroken.

Location is key. The farther you are from a tower the bigger/better antenna you need. If you don't already know where the towers are you should check here before you buy.

Yeah you get all the plugins. Just know the jailbroken capable ones(2nd gen) cost about 3-4x as much as the latest ones that can't get jailbroken.

Correct and if you don't already have that version it costs a lot more to buy one on ebay or amazon than it does to buy a new one in the store. Most people selling them are aware that those are the only ones that can be jailbroken. Unless you get lucky and find somebody selling one that doesn't have a clue.

I saw that before and was wondering if anybody had one.

I assume you like it? Easy to setup and use? What all do you get?
