The lab that mixed up the samples should foot the bill. If they don't, I'd take legal action to make them.

I agree. I would fight this one.

So I guess I should call a lawyer

Pay the bill first or set up a payment plan by the hospital will not wait on you and the lab arguing before they send you to collections.

I would start by getting a copy of the erroneous blood test plus the one done in the ER for starters. Then have a conversation with your doctor about if the original one could even be accurate. Then go from there. But I guess it depends how much the bill is and how far you want to take it. At the very least I would ask for it to be forgiven if it is obvious it was a mistake.

I don't know. I'll have to ask my Dr

I would ask to see if the charges for this ER visit and associated labs could be forgiven.
But, having said that, the medical personel did the right thing. a potassium of 7.5 would kill most people. It would cause your heart to stop beating.
It's a shitty situation, but if it was your mother/child who got these lab results, you'd want them to get immediate care and then you'd be relieved it was just a lab error.

Believe me. I was just happy to walk out of the hospital on my own power.

Hemolysis of the sample can cause a falsely elevated potassium. I've never seen it happen with creatinine. I would figure if your creatinine was that elevated, your BUN would be up too.

As for the bill, collateral damage, you are responsible.
Don't take legal advice from the OT.
Somebody was negligent, likely an agent of the hospital. They should eat the bill. I wouldn't pay it without a fight.

This was my Dr's first thought but they retested the sample and got the same results

What about the bill?
I would tell them to go frick themselves if they tried to stick me with it

this makes anyone wonder about blood work results from a physical.
cholesterol and so forth.

Your blood could have been mixed up with somebody else's. It's not that common, but it happens especially when tube labeling protocol is not followed. That happens more in Dr.'s offices where rules are not closely monitored. What's bad is there might be somebody out there now in renal failure and it's not you.
More likely to have happened is a sampling issue on instrument that was used to do the chemistry panel. Sometimes that happens when blood is spun before it is fully clotted. They did the right thing by calling you back in for a recheck.
Also, it is creatinine
No lawyer is necessary. Just an error and not intentional.
