Question About Weapons Acquired By Terrorist Groups

Before the game came on I was watching 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. And I was just thinking about terrorist groups like Ansar al-Sharia who seem to have access to a lot of firepower.
Whoever they get their weapons from, where do those people get the weapons to sell to these groups? Are some of those weapons provided by other countries through a 2nd hand source?

Obama gave weapons directly to Mexican drug cartels. Who knows what they did with them after that.

Gun shows, brah. Ask any left-winger.

I'm just wondering if we can buy them after they are caught. Kind of like a jihadi yard sale.

There are rumors that weapons the US "left behind" in places like Iraq and Afghanistan "somehow" made their way into the hands of ISIS leadership. There are also rumors that the CIA armed them in order to overthrow some governments in the Middle East. Who knows...

In this situation the US provided the Afghans with weapons, in order to help them fight the Russians.

Better to have an interest in all groups than to pick a winner...you can degrade all by supporting all, but non know it...unknown knowns

The armed forces "lost" billions worth of weapons, etc in both Iraq and Afghanistan

The entire Libyan military got wasted and the weapons were just laying around. Typically these organizations steal from armories but there's also always the black market which is full of old Soviet gear. Drugs and oil are profitable and can buy a shite ton of firepower.

Lot of guns went on the market when the former Soviet Union/Iron Curtain fell. And the US along with Egyptians, Israelis, Pakistanis, and Saudi dumped a lot into Afghanistan to fight the Soviets, and the Soviets sent a lot there as well. Throw in a few sympathetic Gulf princes, and some misappropriating of American funds and weapons to shady groups over the last 16 years there's your answer.

Of course, that does beg the question why, if GM can turn off the engine on a stolen car, we can't turn off the engine on a stolen APC?

This isn't a rumor. The equipment was the Iraqi army's that was supplied by the US. A lot of that has been completely destroyed by now and the ammunition supply has been exhausted. There's nothing left in Afghanistan though because we're still there. The Taliban/ISIS and the different tribes buy using drug money.

Bull. The only ones that gave arms/money/supplies to ISIL was families in the KSA, Qatar, etc.
The US policy against ISIS was more so to do with Obama's weak foreign policy in a broader sense and than a targeted effort to allow them a space to grow.

It's easier and cheaper to just drop a JDAM on them instead of having to install tracking and monitoring equipment.

Well, take for example ISIS fighters in Syria. Our government took weapons from Libya and shipped them to Turkey for transfer to Syrian "rebels" in 2012.
