Some of both. It is basically viewed like alcohol when it comes to doing it out in the open in public (i.e. open container laws), and like cigarettes in that you can't do it in an enclosed public place like restaurants and bars (at least in Denver, but I think that is basically true for the rest of CO also).

ETA: So while if you want to smoke a cigarette after eating a meal at a restaurant you can step outside and smoke one, you can't step outside and smoke a joint.

Even before they passed the recreational law it was not taboo to see anyone blazing up on the street.

That's pretty much how it is here in Chicago now. It's going to be fully legal by the end of the state's 4-year medical marijuana pilot program. Now they just write you a ticket if anything unless you are selling

Hell, I've seen kids blazing up in front of a police station

More like alcohol but it's not legal to smoke in public here in CO. How employers handle it is entirely up to them and independent of the legality of it. In other words, employers can still give you drug tests if they want to.

In states where it's legal, can you smoke it on a break at work?

1. In most of those states, it's not legal to smoke pot outdoors.

2. Most employers that would drug test for it before still do despite it being legal.

3. It is viewed more like drinking alcohol.

If you go to where the cigarette smokers are on break and light up a jay, its a bad idea. It's worse than drinking on your break. Even though it's legal, you'll get viewed as the stoner in the office. Then you get filed into all the stoner stereotypes which will effect your superior's opinion of you. Even though you may not be a stoner at all. Do what the other pot smokers do and drive around the block. IMO if you're getting high in the middle of the work day, your job isn't very important and might be time to seek more responsibilities.

new tests to see if you've been smoking within such a short time

Maybe more companies will look into this as their drug test

I would love to implement this sort of drug test at work for our random tests, but unfortunately our insurance doesn't accept these tests as marijuana is still a Schedule 1 drug and is still illegal in TN. It's bullshite. I don't care if my guys smoke when they go home. All I care is that they show up to work sober and stay that way until they're off the clock.
