I was recently told at the Audi dealership that "remote" start from the key remote is not available as it is "illegal" in Germany, where the vehicle is produced.

I went about my business, but dismissed it in my mind. A $60K vehicle without a remote start that is to be driven in the United States of America is not a vehicle that I will consider.

Was my sales person inadequately informed or was he trying to overcome an objection with a bullshite reason that sounded better in his mind?

It is illegal in some states and overseas to "warm up" your vehicle.

Hence no remote start.

Seems to be true. No remote start on a 2017 S class. That's nuts

Thank you for the reply.

Does that mean that not one German made vehicle that is to be driven the USA does not have a remote start that is built-in and not an after market accessory?

I believe according to some folks on bimmerpost that installing an aftermarket remote start could potentially void your warranty.

edit: Reasons in Germany is because they have AUX heaters already. No need for warm up / remote start.

That is insane

As I said in my car features thread, I wouldn't buy another vehicle without it. Having the AC run even for just a few seconds in the summer makes such a huge difference.

Remote start's not that big of a deal if you have a garage.

He's not wrong in that new German cars with remote start aren't a thing. The only one I can think of that MIGHT have it is the current BMW 7-Series if you option the super high-tech Display Key, which is basically a giant key with a touchscreen on it that can do all kinds of shite.

Just Googled it and apparently it is illegal to leave a car parked and running in the EU, hence no remote start availability.

100 % right there with you. I have it on my F150 that doesn't pull anything or go off-road, but after having it, I can't imagine not getting it on another future vehicle purchase.

Same goes for seat warmers and coolers.

I do, but I also drive my vehicle outside of my garage, in the Louisiana heat.

Illegal to do it while the vehicle is unattended, or illegal period? (Only care about in the states)

Still getting a M2 once this lease is up .

There's one here in the parking garage that I walk past every morning. Beautiful car.

It really is something they should just turn off for Europe and leave it on when car is sold here. It's such a nice feature.

Remote start from inside house, stick keys in pocket, load up for work, walk out grab door handle and jump in and hit start. Keys stay in pocket.

I remember reading that warming up an engine really does nothing to reduce wear or prolong the working life of a modern engine. Could this be the case or was this propaganda from the eco freaks?

I totally get remote starting to get the passenger compartment cooled down (especially in a dark vehicle with dark interior). I have a '15 Audi A 6 Quattro and wish I had remote start for this reason.

Takes like 20 seconds to get the heat out of your car.
