FREDERICK, Md. — A Frederick County Public Schools employee in Maryland has spoken out after she was fired for a tweet she posted from the school’s social media account, correcting a student’s spelling, reports CBS Baltimore.

Following forecasts predicting winter weather coming to the area on January 5, a student tweeted at the Twitter account, @FCPSMaryland, asking schools to close “tammarow.”

FCPS Social Media Coordinator Katie Nash reportedly wrote in response to the student, from the school’s Twitter: “But then how would you learn how to spell ‘tomorrow?’ :)”

Nash says the school system was working on being more relaxed and interactive with students on social media. She thought her reply would be a way to engage the students, who were excited about the possibility of a snow day.

“The students were tweeting back and forth, so it just sort of provided a natural opportunity to respond, in a fun, light-hearted way,” Nash tells WHAG.

A student tweeted "Close school tammarow PLEASE.

School employee responded "but then how would you learn how to spell "tomorrow".

I can see why the school would not approve, but how is this worth firing someone over?

Hate to say it, but it's pay to play and keep a lawyer on retainer in that field.

Teacher meant well, but goddamn, you got to know that social media is the devil if you are in a (even slightly) visible position.

frick if I know.. Who would actually be offended by that comment? Its might not have been the best idea, but it wasn't anything someone should have lost their job over... Unless it was someone they were looking for a reason to fire.

If that was my kid, I'd demand the worker be given her job back and publicly thank her for the the overtime teaching.

That shouldn't have been remotely worth getting fired over. That never would have crossed my mind as being over the line.

I came in thinking a teacher was fired for sending some sort of sexual tweet out to the student

This is a stupid reason to fire someone

She was being a smart arse. She could have responded in a more mature way and not had this problem

If twitter was around when I was in HS and something like this would have happened to me... I would have laughed it off, the next day at school everyone would be like "ooooo Ms _____________ got you. You really spell tomorrow with As?"

I don't see how that is the first thing that crosses someone's mind.. They read that tweet then right away "oh shite.. we need to fire her".

I wholeheartedly agree.
But, how can you not know there is an army of eager to be offended folks out there waiting to misconstrue an innocuous post?

I'm glad social media wasn't around when I was a teenager.

Seems like everyone is offended by something these days.

It's sad if something like this sent someone to the unemployment line.

Over BS...
