Similar thing happened to me about 2 years ago. Made reservation online about 2 months in advance. They called me the day before pickup to confirm. Show up the next morning and tell me no availability there but another location has one. Head 30 minutes over to the other location only for them to tell me they have nothing available but the original location has a truck for me.

At that point I just cancelled and paid the extra money to hire movers with their own truck. Will never use U-Haul again.

Its crazy. I think its sparking an interest in Uber type car rentals.
I've had numerous people ask if they could rent my car when in town. I'm letting a friend borrow mine for a few days as she is here from out of town. Nothing in town to rent.

Just realized that the federal government freeze on evictions due to COVID expires today. All the free loaders that haven't been paying rent have to move. Was told that there are no U-Hauls available in the entire state of California. (seriously)

Friend was told the same yesterday about Mississippi. U-Haul and Penske.

I don't think it's the moratorium ending. They don't have to move yet. Lawsuits can't even be filed and served till Monday and it will take weeks or months after that to actually evict someone.

I think it's probably every US college student's lease ending today.

I’m in that industry and box trucks have been hit by the same microchip shortage the car industry’s been hit with. The demand has also been sky high with people having everything delivered over the last year so there’s been a waiting list for those trucks for the last 8 months. I’d see if Enterprise Truck Rental could get you going if there is one close enough to you.

Nothing new for u-haul. It’s happened to me numerous times since as early as 2003 when we were trying to move from BR to Zachary.
From personal experience, it goes back at least to the '70s. U-Haul is a bunch of goddamn liars.

If you have a pending Uhaul "reservation" I would suggest having a back up plan.

I moved from Monroe to Houston this exact weekend last year and that exact situation happened to me. I was able to secure one at Penske for 3x as much. I had to move THAT day. As luck would have it, As I’m about to leave Uhaul, I see the tuck pull up. Get my Uhaul and go.

They overbook on purpose because they have to manage for people that don’t return the truck. This is supposedly the busiest moving weekend of the year.

Use Penske.

But note that if you are moving FROM a state with a high net outmigration, you may pay more than moving TO the same state. Louisiana is sort of treading water and they still have shortages. It’s much worse in stages like Pennsylvania, Illinois, and California.

Uhaul screwed us a few months ago. Their system went down and we weren’t able to get the code to pick up our truck. They have a $50 guarantee for reservations. They didn’t charge us for the rental and ended up paying us $50. Not much, but it was better than nothing.

I won’t bore anyone with a story that would sound nearly identical to the ones already posted, but after the shitshow that was moving this March, I’ll never give Uhaul another dollar if I can avoid it.

The sad thing about this is that Penske gave you great service and gave you exactly what you were looking for and you asked them to match a competitors price that provides the worst service. You expect a great company to match the price of a shitty company. That’s pretty pathetic

Funny, my friends moved today and had a Uhaul scheduled for an in-town move. They showed up on time and no trucks were available. Had to drive 30 minutes to another Uhaul dealer. Got a discount on the mileage at least.

When I moved in December, Uhaul had to give me a bigger Uhaul because they didn't have any in the size I requested on my online order.

Next time I move, its either Penske or i'm hiring movers. Not worth the hassle.
