Pretty much what I'm getting from all the responses is that if you're cheap and lazy get the oil less fryer oven and take the hit on the flavor.

I agree with the OP, oilless frying is not as good a deep fried turkey, but I think it is close enough (about 95% as good).

With the oilless fryer I can cook one turkey any time of the year for a reasonable cost--the expense for the oil makes one turkey cost prohibitive.

I'll buy several turkeys while they are on sale, put them in the freezer, and have "fried" turkey throughout the year.

Plus it is easy (to go along with the cost) so you don't mind cooking one on a nonholiday and enjoying it. I cooked one on memorial day just because we had a turkey in the fridge. We had a tv set up on the pier so we had LSU baseball, beer, girls in bikini's, turkey cooking and ribs smoking as well.

If you go oiless, butter the outside and season it. Also, use twice as much injection juice as normal. You can pretty much set it and forget it until its done. Next day allow one hour to clean the f**ker!

Oil is more money, faster, less alcohol consumed(good or bad) and easier to clean(no basket).

I gave my electric one away because of the cleaning.

I think they taste better, especially if you do a good job coating the outside in canola oil before you fry it. Plus it is healthier and can be used as a smoker as well.

Wait, you've gotta put oil on an oiless bird?

Correct. If you have just 1 turkey, go oilless.

The only way oil fryers are time and cost effective and don't waste oil is when you can do multiple turkeys.

Yes, that is what seals in the moisture. That is why it is called an oil less not an oil free.

Ovens do not necessarily cook the same as the oil less fryer. Ovens usually use coils which produce uneven heat. The fryer has the bird standing up and provides 360degF heat through infrared and no direct coils.

I used it on a chicken for trial and it was damn good. Best I've ever cooked it. I will chime in later today in turkey results.

I'm using the big easy again this year and deep frying another one for a big group. I think the infrared is the functional equivalent. It's certainly not better but every bit as good if you do it right. Once the turkey is on the plate so long as it's juicy and tender it's gonna be fine. . It's turkey.

Yes, oilless fryers create magic heat that can not possibly be reproduced by gas or electric ovens. Marketing works I guess.

In your opinion, do birds cooked in oil less fryers taste the same as birds cooked in ovens?

I've had some that were pretty close to oven baked birds

I've never thought they were even close to comparable. Roasted birds just have a completely different flavor. Oil less birds keep that same fried flavor without being completely dried out. Just my opinion.

Cooking right now.

Love this thing. Tastes just as good. No doubt. Easier to clean and maintain. Cheaper. I've had it for 3 years and have turned my whole family on to it. Everyone has one now.
