Project Goliath - The want to end the internet as we know it

Holy shite, Sony, Universal, Fox, Comcast et al all colluding to take down Goliath (read Google). This is pretty incredible and give great insight of how some want to change the internet forever.
"WE START FROM THE PREMISE THAT SITE BLOCKING IS A MEANS TO AN END."
"THERE IS ONLY SO FAR WE CAN GET WITH THE AG’S UNLESS WE DEVELOP BETTER EVIDENCE AND INTELLIGENCE AGAINST GOLIATH."
This is most all from the Sony leak.

I'm really enjoying these leaks. We're finding out the real scoop about how entire industries really work. It's been educational.
Great work, North Korea!

North Koreahackers leaked tons of info from Sony over the Seth Rogen/James Franco movie they did.
Some of it in the leak references how a group of Hollywood power-brokers have formed this shadow consortium to try and bring Google to its knees in order to stop online piracy.
They detail using pooled financial resources to retain legal counsel, dig up dirt and information that casts Google in a negative light, actively bribing/lobbying state AG's to shut down ISP's or have ISP's block websites suspected of piracy before proving it in court.
It's called Project Goliath.

Why is Google blamed for online piracy? Piracy exists regardless of Google. Is Google "Goliath" or is piracy "Goliath"?

Google allows the pirated content to pass through their systems. Therefore the MPAA feels Google is at fault and therefore the Goliath.
They want Google to block the pirated content and Google won't so they are trying to destroy them.

Having a code name for Google makes sense, not so much for piracy though.

Yes, it's good stuff.
Here is a little more detail about what has happened behind the scenes and has been leaked....
Each week Google removes millions of ‘infringing’ links from search engine results at rightsholders’ request, 9.1m during the last documented week alone. In the main Google removes these links within hours of receiving a complaint, a record few other large sites can match.

Google has complied with take down notices they've received from the MPAA, RIAA, and the studios.
After delivering a major blow to torrent sites during October, Google must've thought the MPAA would be pleased. Instead, however, the MPAA issued a 'snarky' press release. According to a leaked email, the press release so infuriated Google's top brass that the company ended cooperation with the MPAA.

When google fiber to the home is fully deployed, google will have end-to-end control over content and they can tell the MPAA to go fly a kite. The fiber network is a very strategic move for google. Google is playing chess and the rest of these yahoos are playing checkers.

Not that I needed a reason to, but this just makes me love Google that much more.

So very true. Really wish they would hurry up though.
Hurry up and take my money for your fiber Google.

The emails reveal a multi-pronged approach to defeating Goliath. One tactic is legal, convincing state prosecutors to take up the fight against Goliath. After a series of meetings at the National Association of Attorneys General in February, MPAA counsel Fabrizio writes, "Goliath has told the AGs to pound sand…they pretty clearly told the AGs that they aren’t going to do anything and essentially threatened the AGs with the possibility of attacking them as they attacked folks in DC during SOPA. The AGs did not like that." As a result, the counsels report a growing coalition of attorneys general willing to take action against Goliath, and the group budgeted $500,000 a year towards providing legal support. Much of that budget went towards retaining the prestigious law firm Jenner & Block, specifically Jenner partner and former US Associate Attorney General Thomas J. Perrelli, who has billed the group for as much as $40,000 a month.
In other emails, Google comes up as a specific target. After a dispute over Google’s most recent anti-piracy measures in October, Fabrizio suggested further action may be yet to come. "We believe Google is overreacting — and dramatically so. Their reaction seems tactical (or childish)," the email reads. "Following the issuance of the CID [civil investigative demand] by [Mississippi attorney general Jim] Hood (which may create yet another uproar by Google), we may be in a position for more serious discussions with Google." A report from the previous February suggests that the Goliath group drafted civil investigative demands (similar to a subpoena) to be issued by the attorneys general. "Some subset of AGs (3-5, but Hood alone if necessary) should move toward issuing CIDs before mid-May," the email says. (Hood issued a CID against Google in July concerning pharmaceutical counterfeiting, but he does not appear to have issued any actions against the company since Fabrizio’s letter in October.)
Certainly puts this news item from three days ago in a whole different light. Mr Hood has some 'splainin to do. LINK

Wow, that's depressing how easily these government officials can be bought.

It's really stunning how cheaply you can buy votes from senators.
Cold Cash Bill was a great example of this.
