pressure washer blowing water hoses?

I borrowed a little Honda pressure washer from a coworker, it has a GCV160 engine on it. It's not anything high-end, I think it's 2400 psi.
I was running the pressure washer for a little while, put it down to climb up a ladder for a minute, and the end of the hose separated from the threaded end.
I didn't think much of it, since it was an old hose. So yesterday I went to Lowe's and picked up a 75' rubber heavy duty hose, it says it's rated for 400psi.
Again, I put the gun down for a couple of minutes and this time it blew out the hose, near the threaded end.
What the frick? Should there be back pressure on that side of the pump? Am I not supposed to leave the pressure washer running even for a couple minutes without spraying?
Educate me.

strange...even if the pressure washer were malfunctioning, there is no way you could be pressurizing up the whole water system to the point of bursting water hoses...
I'll have to think about this a little more...

No. Not the hose leading to the gun. I'm using the hose that came with the pressure washer for that. I'm talking about the water hose supplying water to the pressure washer.

Heat maybe? Both blow-outs were right near the pressure washer. It didn't seem overly hot though.

Is the engine idling down at all when you stop washing?

Sounds about the same, maybe a hair.

Did you put a bind on the supply hose by pulling on the unit with the wand? That could cut the supply hose by the fitting

maybe you are getting some kind of wierd harmonics going on due to the vibration of the motor coupled with the pulsation from the pump...

maybe pump bypass is malfunctioning

No, it was curled up on the ground.

Maybe I'll get more responses if I change the topic from "water hoses" to "hose pipes"

So I'd have to bring it somewhere for repair? Or the unit is toast?

that's a tricky question
you can buy the pump units and swap them out but I honestly don't know what the cost/benefit of it would be. PW's usually only last me about 2 years - got one sitting in the shop right now with problems
eta: u might check youtube videos for anyone who had similar problems - might find a way to fix it without having to remove the pump or buy a new one

They will build up back pressure if the unloader does not work properly and release the excess pressure when you leave the gun closed for a period of time.
You can get a good rubber hose from Sears with a lifetime warranty. If it blows take it back and get another one. Then read this link to troubleshoot and learn more than you ever wanted to know about an unloader valve.
