Power + Prejudice + Action = Racism

I got into a discussion with a gentleman (AA) this morning about discrimination/racism in the South, and he dropped this reasoning on me:
Racism = Power + Prejudice + Action
He then proceeded to tell me that by his rationale, white people are the only ones who can be racist, because "through privilege, we are the only ones who hold power to deprive those we subjugate".
One more thing I found curious, he was also talking about the definition of race, and how he could identify himself as African American because, although he had never been to Africa, he has African ancestry (or at least he thinks he does). I asked him if I could identify as German/English American, and he said "No, it doesn't work that way"
How has the OT dealt with these deep conversations before?

I had a guy I worked with tell me that black people would live for thousands of years if it wasn't for white people. Some folks are just a bit off.

Here's how you should have handled this....
Step 1
Step 2

Well I'd take issue with how he defines racism. Only one of those elements is really required for racism: prejudice. Power and action are elements that enable a racist (prejudiced) person to harm others, but they are not necessary for a person to be a racist.
So he's just wrong if you define racism in the way it's commonly understood.
Using his very narrow, specific, and IMO ridiculous definition of racism, he's a little less wrong in his other conclusions, but he's still very wrong.
But having a conversation with this guy sounds like it might be fruitless in the end. I'd still try because I find it hard to walk away from an argument.

The funny thing about the word racism, is it appears to be the only word in the English language that we allow to be arbitrarily defined by anyone at anytime, so it means everything and nothing at the same time. It is fricking absurd.

Your friend is a racist - plain and simple.
He, and others like him, use HIS definition of racism to excuse bad behavior by minorities while holding white people responsible for that very same behavior.

I used to work with a guy who had a tattoo of Africa on his arm. I asked him if he would tattoo a photo of his mother if she had sold him to another family. he got pissed and said I was an idiot and didn't know history at all.
oh well...........
oh well...........

Poor white with 25 act and poor black with 24 act. If affirmative action college chooses black then the black has racist over the white.
Racism is a case by case basis.

If you disagree with him, he'll yell at you for being a racist. If you agree with him, he'll still yell at you for being a racist.
Just walk away
Just walk away

His definition of racism is correct. You can be prejudiced or bigoted no matter what your race, but only those in power can be racist.
This has been proven in sociological studies.
