Potential career change

Here's a quick? summary, I'm 25 I work retail sales in the wireless industry. I actually make decent money (60Kish) and have great benefits especially when you consider my education level. I left college around 90/120 credit hours into a history degree. Originally wanted to go to law school but when that didn't line up I bailed. My wife and I together gross over 100K so it's hard to leave when we have a decent income.
On the other hand I'm burnt out on retail. I do love technology so I've considered IT, I just don't know where to start with that (A+ Cert?) I'm almost sure an entry level IT position will be a pay cut. My company also provides 8K of tuition assistance so I've considered going back to school, but I'm not sure what degree would be worth it.

So you dropped out of school, decided you couldn't cut it in law school and chose to work in retail? Boy that went downhill fast.

Civil Engineering. Move to Atlanta and get a job with the DOT. Best job security in the nation right now. You don't even have to be competent.

A+ will get you on a help desk somewhere. That's about a $40K/year job with benefits. Depending on where you go, the career track is good.
I'm currently doing the same thing. I left our family business and started all over. Currently prepping for the A+ Exam. I'm already on the help desk for a software company. The opportunities here and in the industry are limitless for someone willing to train and willing to travel. Due to the nature of our software, my next two steps with be the Cisco Industrial cert, then on to CodeAcademy for SQL training, and PMP after that. The Cisco cert alone with worth $60K/year.

this is the OT, after all... land of the ivory towers and internet billionaires. Back in reality, if the dude goes to work everyday, has a wife, and supports his family, that's successful in my book.

also a side route could be getting A+ cert then doing help desk stuff but teaching your self programming on the side. (many free resources to do this) then get a cert in programming in a year or 2. Depending on your market you could find yourself at $60k+ entry as a jr. developer....and in around 5yrs find yourself at around $80-95k as a sr. dev

I'd look into This. Much less time, although more money per time spent if that makes sense. Coding is where it's at right now if you don't have a degree.

I can't blame you for wanting to leave retail. I did it part time while in school and it was fricking miserable.
But to be honest, your prospects of changing careers without any kind of degree will be an uphill battle. Not impossible, but definitely uphill.
I'd try and finish up that degree before looking and maybe work part time and tighten the belt while doing that. A history degree isn't the flashiest but sometimes all it takes is that piece of paper to make all the difference.

This should be viewed like a company match on a 401k. You would be dumb to not finish those last 30 hours in school. Hell, you would basically be doing it for free if you are located in LA.
get the degree, work on the cert at night and work when you can. Sure it'll suck but after a year you'll have a college degree, a viable job outlook, and little to no student debt.

I say finishing school is a no brainer. Itll be tough, but worth it long term.
I dont know much about the IT field, but other options could be engineering or accounting. Esp. With engineering, you'd have the option of a desk job or field job in a number of different industries.

If you're starting over in a new career path most will be a step down from 60k. There aren't many entry level jobs that pay more than that.

He could go the Epic EMR credential trainer route and make double that in a year. That's if he does not mind traveling all the time.
