A Baton Rouge woman who deputies said was drunk and trying to beat a red light while driving through an intersection Sunday caused a two-vehicle wreck that injured five, including four young children, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Whitney Wilson, 27, of 15012 Jefferson Highway, told an East Baton Rouge sheriff’s deputy she was headed south on U.S. 61 when she turned left onto Barringer Foreman Street as the traffic light was changing and collided with a northbound vehicle on U.S. 61, sending both cars careening into a canal, the Sheriff’s Office report says.

Three young children who were passengers in Wilson’s vehicle — between 2 and 10 years old — suffered serious injuries in the crash, the report says. A deputy’s inspection of Wilson’s vehicle indicated that none of the children were wearing seat belts or were buckled into child safety seats. The driver of the other vehicle and a 5-year-old passenger were also seriously injured, the report says.

Wilson told a sheriff’s deputy that she’d had two large glasses of brandy mixed with a splash of Coca-Cola about two hours before the crash, according to the report. Wilson agreed to take a field sobriety test and showed signs of impairment, according to the report, but the test was cut short because Wilson also suffered unspecified injuries in the crash.

Wilson was booked into Parish Prison Monday on a felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, five counts of first-degree negligent vehicular injuring, three counts of child restraint violations and one count of making an improper left turn at an intersection. The deputy’s report indicates the driver of the other vehicle may have a spinal injury and one of the children may have neurological injuries. If the condition of any of those injured worsens, the deputy wrote, Wilson could be booked on additional counts.
