Amazon

Phosfree is $25 on Amazon and (I think) $45 at Leslie's.

Best place to have your water tested in BR?

I went to Splash and all he did was dip one of those indicator sticks into my sample. I was hoping for a digital readout showing all of my levels but obviously that wasn't going to happen there.

Pool & Spa World? Leslies? Someone else?

Leslie's will provide a digital readout and printout of what's needed to get everything in line.

After a few years, I bought a test Kit and do it myself. Easier and quicker. Bought the most popular deluxe test kit on Amazon for $40. Should last year's. Pool is easier know that I spent the time to learn the process myself.

I have a decent kit too but I got algae in my pool a couple of weeks ago (I was out of town on vacation) and I have been struggling to get it right. My kit did not detect any FC so I dumped 3 gallons of bleach in the pool to SLAM it. Everything cleared up and was getting better in a day or two (FC came back down to 3) but the next day I tested it and it was back at 0. So, I don't know if the small amount of residual algae in the pool ate up all of the FC or if I have a problem with my SWG. I cleaned the SWG with muratic acid but the pool still doesn't seem like it is generating enough chlorine to keep up. I want to see what my CYA level is but I am not having much luck with my kit on that for some reason.

The PH level is fine (7.6ish).

So, I was hoping to bring a sample somewhere to see if they could give me all of the levels and then go online to find a pool forum to get real expert opinions and not those from sales people at a pool store.

Most tests don't test for Phosphate. Algea can't grow without phosphates.

Get a phosphate test kit and check your levels. $10 on Amazon. You'll have to first add an algecide ( any store even walmart) and then phosfree to lower/ remove phosphates.

For supplies, testing and repairs I like Pinch a Penny. I've gotten great service from the one on Sherwood. For equipment like filters and robots you are better off online.

There is still some algae eating your chlorine.

Step 1: Balance PH
Step 2: Check stabilizer
Step 3: Add chlorine until FC remains at 2-4

How do you check the stabilizer? Don't I have to know my CYA levels for this? This is the part that I am confused about.

oh nevermind.

i just went through this with my pool; turns out the impeller had a small pebble stuck in it and so the chlorine wasn't actually getting into the pool at all.

eta took me a couple of months to get the hang of it, but now i can't imagine paying anyone to service my pool.

amazon is pretty good..but..believe it or not, i just ordered identical chlorine tabs and baking soda tabs (new!) from walmart for cheaper than amazon.

these things are the bomb if you've never used them in a chlorine pool. keeps your pool chemistry on lock for months.

just throw in a tab once a week in the skimmer basket in addition to your normal chlorine tabs and your pool will never need another chemical!

I worked in a pool store for a few years. I'm not trying to sell you anything so you know I'm not trying to sell you shite.

1st off it's the middle of summer so guess what? Unless your CYA level is around 60-80 you will lose chlorine fast all else being equal.

Now you are a salt pool. Have you cleaned your SWG in the past 6 months? If not then do it with a 5-1 mixture of water-muratic acid.

Don't use bleach. That's just advice I give to people because it fricks with pH.

If you turn your SWG up to 100% and still can't keep a FC level of 1 then you may need to test it to see if it's still working. Some pool stores wil do that for you. The one I worked at did.

You must keep your FC level above a 3 for at least 3 days if you have an outbreak of algae. Then monitor your FC on a daily basis.

BTW, I don't trusts those strips that test CYA levels.

Also, do test your phosphate levels. Bring it to a store.

Some algae can store phosphates and come back quick if you don't have the chlorine up high and the phosphate reading are low.

Thank you sir. Are you in BTR? I'm looking for a good, knowledgable pool store here in town for this and other questions that come up from time to time.

Sounds like it's just as complex to balance a salt pool as it is chlorine.

If you want knowledgeable, avoid Leslie's. Clearwater Pool & Spa world is THE place for testing, advice, etc. They makes Leslie's look like amateurs.

I disagree about Clearwater. Since buying Pool and Spa World, the girls who analyze the water are gone and they are so busy selling above ground pools, they can't help when you go in. No one answers the phone, you have to leave a message. The service guy Robert is awesome but they just aren't good. Russell Pools does a good job.
