Why does it matter that it was free? If he sustained serious injury due to negligence or some other issue causes by the store, does the $2 he would have paid really make a difference? Or if it is frivolous, does the $2 make it less bad?
It's a cup of hot coffee like many of us have gotten hundreds of times. He spilled it in his lap and is suing the company that gave it to him. It doesn't matter that it was free and it doesn't matter that he was a cop. It does make a nice shake your head story when you add those details though.

I hate how policeman get free shite all the time. I'm not being anti-cop, but why do they get free shite all of the time? I worked in a deli in high school and they would raid the place with absolutely no shame.
LOL it's not like there's a law demanding places give cops free stuff.
But it is desirable, especially at night, to give officers a reason to frequent a place of business in some areas.
Donuts and coffee are cheap, don't want your place to end up as the scene of a robbery or murder on the news.

emotional damage he suffered
This shite pisses me off.
99& of people claiming 'emotional damage' should be laughed out of the courthouse, tarred and feathered, and then ridden out of town on a rail.
There should be an extremely high bar for anything resembling 'emotional damage' making it to a courtroom.

In the lawsuit, Kohr said he poured cold water on the burn, but the pain intensified. He claimed the injuries aggravated his Crohn's disease and resulted in surgery to remove a portion of his intestine
Not sure how coffee spilled on your lap gets to your intestine.
The interesting thing is the numbers. If he legit had to have a portion of his intestine removed, the surgical bills alone would exceed $50K. This smells of a judge/jury threshold of $50K, like Louisiana, where all bullshite cases are alleged to be under that amount so they can get a bench trial and avoid a jury giving them zero.
Tried one of these in Natchitoches Parish, where plaintiff dropped cup handed to her thru drive thru window. 1 month treatment for burns, small amount discoloration on upper thigh and lower abdomen. Judge awards $49,900. Not a cop though.

Did y'all stipulate to below 50k or did the Plaintiff do it on his/her own initiative?

The free items that officers get are usually just free coffee and fountain drinks at convience stores, otherwise known as stop and robs.
Our local Starbucks never gives free coffee to officers nor do they give a discount.
The department I retired from we were allowed to accept discounts, we were not allowed to ask for them. That was a big no no.
I doubt I would ever sue for spilling hot coffee on myself. That would seem to be my fault. Now if a Starbucks worker threw coffee on me then I would sue.

So the dumbass knew coffee is hot..
Spilled it on himself and wants to sue?
Yeah frick that guy..

Oh he's suing Starbucks... don't care.

Would the pussy have sued if he got a free iced coffee, spilled it and got frostbite?

welp, i stand corrected. From the article:
seems odd to ask for that small amount with those claimed injuries. Maybe he was avoiding removal to federal court, but that would be $75K.

Did you watch the story about the woman who spilled coffee in her lap from McDonald's? Everyone laughed at the story but if you watch the documentary on it, her injuries were as severe as they were because McDonald's had the coffee way beyond regulation temperatures

What's the regulation on temperature? Don't you make coffee by pouring boiling water over coffee grounds?

So based on this logic, I can sue if I wreck my truck and get hurt?
Yes I know the McDonald's story.

If the manufacturer of your truck made the steering so non-responsive or the brakes so weak that they presented an unreasonably dangerous risk of harm... sure.

The water was almost 3 times the recommending heat because the manager wanted to make more coffee faster
The heat from the coffee made the lid of the cup melt off which spilled over the lady giving her third degree burns
She had a slam dunk case of negligence but everyone jumped on the bandwagon of "SHES SUING BECAUSE HER COFFEE WAS TOO HOT"
Not saying something similar happened here, but a headline seeker news source isn't always the best way to judge the merits of a case
