Police beat innocent man after high speed pursuit hits his car

In a new video of a fiery crash that critically injured a West New York man Sunday night, police officers are seen kicking and dragging the man -- who sources say was a victim in the two-car wreck -- into the roadway.
City officials said Wednesday morning they have "serious concerns" about how police handled the pursuit that began sometime around 11 p.m. in the Greenville section of the city and ended about six miles away with an innocent man fighting for his life.
The video, obtained by Univision and shared with The Jersey Journal, shows the 28-year-old man emerge from a burning car with parts of his body covered in flames. He is seen rolling on the ground to put out the flames. At the same time, more than half a dozen officers, many with their guns drawn, surround the man.
At least one cop in the video is seen forcefully kicking him in the head and neck area. Other officers are seen stomping on parts of his body.
Leo Pinkston, 48, has been charged with aggravated assault and eluding in the crash. Police fired multiple shots at Pinkston about a mile down the road before the crash.
"Our investigators have reviewed the video and we believe with certainty that this man is the bystander from West New York who suffered burns, not Leo Pinkston, the individual pursued by police," Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.
And it gets better...

No cops have been suspended in connection with the chase, Carmine Disbrow, president of the Jersey City Police Officer's Benevolent Association, said. He criticized Public Safety Director Jim Shea's decision to confiscate new police SUVs from the district's involved in the pursuit.
"As it should be, this entire incident is being fully investigated," said Carmine Disbrow, president of the JCPOBA. "Taking swift action isn't always elegant, but this video clearly shows that the officers acted quickly to extinguish the flames, and pull this man out of harm's way."

LMAO. Right, that one officer was clearly trying to kick the flames out of his face

The police maintain they were trying to put the flames out and, if you see the video made with a 1970's flip phone, you really can't tell.
The guy was most definitely on fire though. Not sure how they expect the police to put it out.
They were originally even complaining about the police dragging him on the ground until they realized they were dragging him AWAY from the burning car. So this might deserve a second look.
Of course, the local politicians already declared that "ANYONE appearing in the video should be fired."

It may not be the most efficient method, but it certainly worked.

Why is this even a story? They were saving his life. My only concern would be how will the firefighters feel about cops trying to take their jobs.

The video I watched had the officers approach him with guns drawn. Then they kicked him in the face after he got on the ground. I'm guessing this isn't standard procedure for a rescue?
In all seriousness I think they thought he was the other guy that they had been pursuing and it was mistaken identity.

That first kick is pretty tough to defend. Everything after that seems like they were getting him away from the car.

Was the guy on fire a white guy or black guy? It shouldn't matter but it does.

Blackened, just past golden brown.

I didn't see anything in that video to make me think they weren't trying to help him.

The police shouldn't have done that. They should have waited til the perp cooled off before touching him.

With guns drawn?

Just trying to put the flames out

Maybe they were water pistols?

They were trying to stomp out the fire on his body.
LEO will be cleared of all wrongdoing, as they were attempting to save him from further injuries due to burning.

I wouldn't kick you in the face even if you were on fire.

Did I miss where they shot him? I see cops pull their guns all the time.

It seemed like they were trying to stomp out the flames around him after he took off his shirt. Not sure how you can tell whether or not they were on his body or not.
The first head kick makes the rest of the video look like a major issue. Without that head kick, the rest of the video seems like the same thing I would do if I came upon the situation.
