The wife and I are looking to plan a long 14-18 day vacation throughout the South. We're trying to find out when would be the best time to go for us (currently thinking March of next year to get out of the dreadful Chicago weather).
We'd like to hit all of the main cities and attractions as well as some beautiful, scenic areas.
Help me out here...If you can think of any great routes or scenic highways, please feel free to add them in. This trip will be one of lesiure.
Virginia:
Richmond?
Charlottesville?
Jamestown?
North Carolina:
Charlotte?
Asheville?
South Carolina:
Greenville?
Charleston?
Georgia:
Savannah?
Macon? We love the Allman Brothers
Atlanta?
Tennessee:
Gatlinburg?
Knoxville?
Chattanooga?
Nashville?
Memphis?
Alabama:
Birmingham?
Mobile?
Montgomery?
Mississippi:
Oxford?
Jackson?
Tupelo?
Biloxi:
Louisiana:
New Orleans?
Baton Rouge?

No need to stop in Jackson. I'd hit up the Delta and Oxford and go straight to the gulf coast. I would see some part of Acadiana in Louisiana as well.

I'd kill myself if I had to spend that much time in a car.

My wife and I went to Charleston a couple weeks ago, definitely suggest going there.
Mississippi - If you like blues and History then check out the delta and make your way down to Natchez then move on to New Orleans. Skip Jackson.

Depending on the direction you are traveling, Natchitoches and a B&B. It isn't a must do, but a cool little city.

That is way too many places to hit in the time you have allotted.

Did you put these last because you know there is a good chance you won't make it out of these cities alive?

Go ahead and skip this one.

The drive from greenville SC to brevard NC is beautiful. Not sure what the road number is. Also they have weird country dance things called contra dancing in upstate SC and also in NC that are pretty cool and well attended by all age groups.
Anywhere in Appalachia during the fall when the leaves are changing is just gorgeous.
The drive down LA 1 to grand isle is also beautiful and the best drive in LA IMO.

To "see the South" you have to go through the rural areas. There are some great cities - the ones to see are the ones with history - but to really get a good taste of southern culture, you're going to have to take long drives down backroads to the towns and hamlets you haven't heard of before.

I'm not planning on hitting them all. That's why I included the question mark at the end (even though some we'll most certainly make like Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Savannah, etc.)

Same here.
But of the places I've been and want to go.
-I liked visiting Jamestown, although we just spent part of the day there.
-Huge fan of Nashville and Gatlinburg wasn't terrible either.
-I'd like to spend some time in Savannah, but haven't been.
-Everything in Mississippi and Alabama is pretty meh to me from a tourist standpoint. At least the stuff I've been to, not saying better doesn't exist. The coast of each state is okay, but there is better out there.
NOLA is quite interesting and there are a few bus tours, or short drives to plantation house museums and swamp tours that are interesting. I see no reason to visit Baton Rouge.

Do not go to Macon. It's along a major interstate so you drive through it so might be worth making a pit stop and checking out some stuff, but don't devote a lot of time here or make it a destination.
Savannah is a charming, classic southern town and River street, while somewhat touristy, will provide you a ton of fun. Also you can drink out in public along the streets which is not normal in most parts of GA.
Atlanta you could spend several days in depdnign on what all you have in mind. Festivals, concerts, Aquariium, CFB HOF, world of coke, piedmont park, restaurants, etc...there's a ton to do here.

Skipping Baton Rouge on this trip would be like traveling to France for the first time and skipping Paris
