My daughter is a student at LSU and just received a call from a scammer saying she needed to send $2400 to some company or she would no longer be a student and that if she hung up then officers would be coming to arrest her. I told her to start by calling campus police and ask if she needed to let the Sherrif's office and/or BR City police know as well. They knew her name and major.

You don't even need a PAWS id/password to find that out. There's a student directory on the LSU website.

Did you give her $2400 so she can pay them so she doesn't get arrested?

I've heard of several people in the BR area getting calls like this saying they owe the IRS money and will be arrested if they don't pay. One scammer demanded it be paid in iTunes gift cards.

If they were smart, they would be calling the parents. How many college students are going to say, "Ok, sure. Would you like $2,400 in cash or shall I write you a check?"

Careful- I just read a story about a guy doing that and his apartment was swatted shortly afterward.

Pissed off caller doxxed his address and home and spoofed his home number claiming he was holding hostages and would shoot everyone. He then said "I am ... and I will kill every one" -click.

I just ignore them.
