YouTube Video - includes both cop dashcam and dashcam from the accused
They did a good job melding the 911 call, the subjects dashcam recording, and the officers dashcam recording into one video.

The city released a video Wednesday evening showing the 2015 arrest of Northwestern graduate student Lawrence Crosby, showing Evanston police kneeing him and punching his legs.
Crosby, a PhD candidate in McCormick, was arrested on Oct. 10, 2015, after someone mistook him for stealing a car that he owned. He was charged with disobedience to police. Following the dismissal of his charges at trial, Crosby filed a lawsuit against the city, which is ongoing.
The Evanston Police Department released the video, which compiles footage from Crosby’s personal dashboard camera, police dashboard cameras and audio recordings of the 911 call that prompted the arrest, as well as conversations between police officers.
In an opening segment, Sgt. Dennis Leaks justified the use of force by police, saying it complied with police procedures.
He added that Evanston police have reviewed the incident further and “determined that we will no longer require subjects to be proned during these types of stops, as we acknowledge and realize that there are some problematic issues that come with that: locations of the stop, weather conditions, and it gives a bad perception.”
On the night of the arrest, a 911 call was placed to EPD by a woman who reported a man was breaking into a car. That man turned out to be Crosby, who is black, and the car was his own. When he heard the woman honk her car horn at him repeatedly, he got into his car and drove away. The woman followed him in her own car and informed police of where he was driving.
Police then pulled Crosby over and he exited his car unprompted, with his hands in the air and a cellphone in his hand, according to the video footage and police reports. Police ordered Crosby to get on the ground. He resisted and was forced on the ground. According to Leaks’ statement in the beginning of the video, officers then struck Crosby with knee strikes and punches to the upper thighs. Crosby was eventually handcuffed by officers and arrested.
During the video, police officers can be heard discussing the arrest with one another. One officer said he told Crosby: “I didn’t shoot you … you should feel lucky about that.”
The graduate student was arrested and charged with disobedience of police. The charges were later dropped.

He's black, what a surprise. Yeah, racism is dead.

Just do what the cop tells you to do. What's so hard about this? However, this is not how you investigate an auto theft; I hope this man gets paid.

Why can't the cop just pull over the guy over, ask the guy for his license and registration that confirms ownership, tell the guy that they received a call, and then send him on his way?
Edit: Well, I forgot that he left his car unprompted. That was a no-no. But it still could have gone a lot smoother on the cops' part with them swarming him like that.

I get headlines try to sensationalize, but the police don't know if it's his car or not. All they know is they got a call from someone who saw someone "breaking into" the car.

It's truly a wonder that people who actually comply with police and do as their told don't seem to find themselves in these type of situations.

That's what should have happened, but that went out he window when dude gets out of his car unprompted.

thats pretty bad.
they had made up their mind he was a dangerous car thief and treating him as such.
he seemed pretty compliant and still got gang tackled.
i wont defend the cops here.

missed that part when watching the video. still though, that was pretty violent and didn't see him 'resisting' them at all.

I am all for complying but I would not be too happy if the cops pulled me over telling me to get on the ground unprompted.
What he should have done is asked the cops if he is being detained. If he was told yes he should of said under what cause. The cops would have told him and then he could have explained his case. Problem averted.

Dude probably could have played that better. Why do people insist on getting out when not told?
Girl that called it in is a dumb bitch. Guy should get to beat the frick out of her as retribution.

If they did ask you to get on the ground would you stand there like a tard like this guy did?

He got out of his vehicle with something in his hand and didn't get on the ground when they clearly asked him to. Yeah that's a conversation that's sure to go smoothly.

This dude has 6 cops yelling different shite at him. No fricking wonder he couldn't figure out what they wanted him to do initially. I watched twice and couldn't figure it out.

He's a dumbfrick.
If you're innocent and polite with police and do what they say, 99/100 times they'll sort it out and let you go.
If you get intense and hostile and ignore their commands they'll match your attitude.
The procedure of making you comply and get on the ground, etc.. Are there for your safety and theirs.
If he was truly innocent, and it was truly his car, he just complies, they take his license and registration, see he's innocent, and let him in his way.
Instead he resisted and ignored their orders and he gets arrested.
That has nothing to do with race. The guy is a PhD student. He should know better.
The 911 caller is probably a racist dipshit though.

The stupid bitch that called and followed him should be charged.

seems like "get on the ground" is pretty easy to understand.

He's a phd student...if he can't figure out what the police are yelling at him to do maybe we need to check that application again.
And again, this is entirely brought on himself by getting out of the car unprompted with an item in his hand. I can't think of a worse way to start off this interaction, other than coming out shooting.

The police should have approached the vehicle with out the fanfare, explained to the driver why he was being stopped, and asked for the driver's license and registration. Once the cop saw the car was not stolen, say "Thank you sir. I apologize for the inconvenience. Have a nice day."

After 3 minutes of that 911 call she still doesn't know where she is, is unsure of the street name, and refuses to just read a number address off a house.

The police are never going to approach a suspected stolen vehicle with a suspect inside of it and talk to him. Thats how you get shot. They'll ask him to exit.
