Why can they not fill my prescription right in front of me? I hand them the script, one person gets it and starts counting out the pills while the cashier gets all my info, I pay, and I'm finished. But that isn't how it works. Why?

Why can it not run like a Starbucks? What am I missing that makes counting pills so damned complicated that it requires an hour (sometimes more!) to get the job done?

Hell, years ago I was in Bucharest and was floored that a pharmacist filled my script in the time it took me to get my wallet out and pay. I had been so a customized to having to wait at an American pharmacy that I stood there in a state of astonishment for a moment.

This is a legitimate gripe. Would love to hear why from an actual pharmacist

This is why you get MD office to call or fax RX. Then its ready when you get there in a couple hours

Unless of course this is for narcotics. In which case stop being a dope fiend

Probably because not all scripts are just pills to be counted into a bottle. Some are large amounts of pills (i.e. something you have to take four times a day for a month) or a compound medication that has to be mixed/combined. People also pick up more than one medication at a time and if I had to sit behind someone like my coworker who has to pick up multiple prescriptions for cancer treatment then we'd be there all night doing it like you're saying right here.

I have a bigger issue with drive-thru pharmacies that try to handle an issue over insurance/medication given through the window and it takes forever. Just ask them to come inside to handle it.

They want you milling around the store so that you make a few impulse purchases.

Pharmacies:

Make you wait on Rx
Impulse buy stuff

I've had scripts filled while I was there, a couple times recently for my daughter actually.

I agree you'd think it would be standard to fill your script if you were there then fill some others that came in before you but the peeps aren't there to pick them up. But it's a job that needs to be exact and that requires set ways.

is what seems to cause most of the delays. They have to work on the orders for the dumbasses in front of you who forgot they got new insurance at the beginning of the year and didn't bring the card in, or someone who is trying to renew the prescription before the insurance company says it's time, etc.

The Walgreens I use has recently started having female Asian pharmacists and female Asian pharmacy students working there Not complaining too much but I do see your point.

Because...

1. You aren't the only customer.

2. They want you to walk around the store and buy other stuff.

My biggest gripe as well. Same as at the drive thru banking, if you have many transactions, or need time to count what you are deposing go inside.

There is the fact that the pharmacist job is to make sure the medicine the doctor prescribed won't kill you

You aren't the only customer is the short answer.

The long answer takes too long to type, and you wouldn't have the patience to read it.

Just slow arse american workers. Plus I am sure there is the unnecessary paper work that needs be filed. Further, you probably have the pharmacist trying to handle some Medicaid patient trying to get more free stuff.
And to top it all off, I am sure the Walgreens and CVS's of the world have figured out how to just understaff the pharmacy just enough to keep getting money from you and their maximizing profits by keeping labor cost low.
