The problem that I have with that idea is that our inhibitions are part of us. We all have thoughts and desires that we know are wrong/not good for us, and we are often able to suppress them. Why is that ability not part of our true colors too?

Exactly. I would never label someone's personality when they are under the influence of a mind-altering foreign substance as their "true" personality.

All of that stuff is a part of us. Personally, my thinking is the dominant function of my personality. I am a logic dominant person. Alcohol impairs thinking. Impairing the most important part of my personality does not make me more myself. Likewise exaggerating my emotions and making them more extreme isn't an accurate depiction of me.

Eta: it's actually the opposite. Alcohol affects your brain chemistry and makes you act like some one who you really aren't.

alcohol affects everyone different. I laugh a lot and like to tell stories when I am drunk and the second.. I mean as soon as I stop drinking I get really tired and I am done... Some people are quiet drunks, some people become really hateful. I guess it all depends on the chemistry in your brain.

Some people are just mean drunks. Don't over think it. And don't drink with them very often.

Yep. I had a guy I worked with that was super smart and cool as can be. But after 3 or 4 drinks he was a nasty sob. You didn't want to be anywhere in his vicinity.

If I'm drunk off beer, I'm perfectly fine. If I get drunk off whiskey/vodka, I'm hell on wheels. Too much Indian blood in me to handle liquor, which is why I don't drink it anymore.

My normal personality is an a-hole who hates everything, but when I get drunk, I'm the nicest and happiest dude in the world. I couldn't make a friend to save my life while sober.

Agreed, but wow, you sound like an angry pot smoker. And for the record, not all people are mellow on weed. Some people trip like they are on LSD, and are definitely not capable of daily functions. Anything that alters you is a drug and I agree that alcohol is by far the most accessible one. And dangerous, if abused. But let's not pretend pot is safe. But I agree, if alcohol is legal, legalize weed as well.

This a-hole who is a dark shadow on my life for too personal of reasons to share here has this issue. This clown functions daily on Hitler-levels of prescribed amphetemines (vyvanse) and when he adds malt liquor and weed to the equation he becomes a totally manic a-hole looking to pick a fight. Also does weird shite like glare threateningly at strangers.

My apartment got broken into recently I have very, very solid reasons to believe this character was the one who did it during one of these manic episodes.

It means more than that. I know plenty of people who cant handle their alcohol, but most because extremely happy when shitfaced. The angry drunks is a sign of something dark deep down IMHO

It's bull shite. A distorted version of you shows when you are drunk. It is totally ridiculous on the face of it to think that an impaired you that can't think ideas through to their full capacity is the true you.

The old Id vs Ego factor comes into play here. The overwhelming majority of people's id becomes less inhibited while your ego is supressed under the influence of alcohol.

Id is who you are at your core, under the varnish of the superficial ego. Thus the underlying issues.

Speaking in Freudian terms, I'd argue that the ego has a better claim to being the core of who we are. Mediating the impulses of the id and the control of the super-ego is critical to determining our behavior.

Drinking definitely increases the role of the id. Rather than seeing that as an unmasking, I see it as an unbalancing.

everybody has issues.

if they are not secure with their issues then alcohol can expose them more.

they want to have the ability to express their issues but are reluctant because of shame/embarrassment/etc.

Funny how different types of alcohol can affect you differently, as well. Wine makes me all pensive and mellow. Vodka makes me lash out. Tequila...all bets are off.

Probably because you drink wine slowly and take tequila shots

It's not. Alcohol changes you. Let's say you don't get drunk until you are 18. So the real you was just waiting to get out for 18 years or until that first time you drank a lil too much? I don't buy that bullshite.

For the most part I have some drinks with friends and have a great time. Others I have woke up regretting shite I did.
