I dated a girl from Louisiana who had her Masters equivalent in Nursing and before she moved to Missouri she honestly asked me, "Are there trees in Missouri? How close is Missouri to the ocean?"

A friend's wife was a teacher in CenLa. We all went out to eat at The Great Wall one night. After the meal we are leaving and she notices a painting of a wall and says "Oh, I guess that's where they got the name for the restaurant".

We all kind of snickered... until we realized she was serious. Her husband told her "No, it's named after the real Great Wall. Of China? The only manmade object that can be seen from space?"

She had only a blank empty stare on her face as she tried to take in this new information. It lasted only a moment before she brushed it off with "I don't believe you."

She had never heard of the Great Wall of China. And she was a teacher.

I would have been an a-hole and pointed out this was also incorrect. That way I could have made then both feel like idiots and made dinner as uncomfortable as possible.

Well, just look at the news, and the way headlines are formulated these days, its not a huge leap if you take most things at face value.

This would be the story of the century if this actually happened, and it's not a stretch to say that anyone who had access to a TV, the Internet, or a radio wouldn't be listening to the feed live world wide if this happened. I think even the nomads of Mongolia would at least be aware of what was going on.

To be fair, she's actually right; you can't see the Great Wall of China from space. If this were the case, you'd easily be able to see interstates from space as well. The Great Wall of China isn't nearly wide enough to be visible from space.
