Going to be in DC for a few days later this summer. We are actually staying in Virginia and we are looking for the best possible way to get into the city. We have heard taking the metro is a good idea. Should we just park at one of the stations outside of the DC or should we park somewhere in DC and just take the subway everywhere throughout the day?

Where in VA are you staying? And the likely answer is to leave the car at your hotel or the Metro station if there's parking.

We are staying near Fairfax. I know there is a metro station in Fairfax but we have been told that parking fills up by 6am or so. Im just looking for the best/easiest option to get into DC.

Once in DC I'm fine with walking and taking the subway everywhere.

Just drive to Franconia-Springfield station and ride the blue/yellow line into the city.

My boss used to live out there and never said anything about the parking filling up there.

Most tourists want to visit the Smithsonians and the White House and monument areas. What I do is park in the Reagan building. Close to where you want to be and only $20. Also secure (bring your id). Once in dc you can metro to further places.

That is how I do it when I go to DC. Pick where you want to get off and go about your day.

Depends where if its proper fairfax city then Vienna is the station. If not there are multiple ones in the county.

I lived in Fairfax near George Mason. You've got options. The orange line terminus is Vienna, near western/northern areas of Fairfax. Franconia-Springfield is the terminus of the blue line; distance wise we lived halfway between but always took the blue line to avoid driving through the Fairfax downtown area.

You can also drive closer and take the metro nearer to the city; Falls Church East is the last metro stop on the orange line (heading towards DC) that has a parking lot if I recall correctly. You can also take a bus into the pentagon (all metro trains and buses accept the smartrip card, which I highly suggest you purchase if taking public trans). The pentagon serves as a trans hub and you can take the metro from there into DC.

I suggest looking at where you're going to be in Fairfax and use the wmata website Metro DC to get a better idea.

Hope that helps.

Silver line is supposed to open within a month or so as well, which will be an option as well. Anything is better than parking downtown and getting gouged.

Depending on how many people are in his family parking may be worth it for the convenience.

Unfortunately the Metro lots do fill up pretty early in the morning. Probably the biggest are Vienna and West Falls Church. Protip: The latter also has a UVA and Virginia Tech adult ed facility that has a sizable lot as well, you can probably use that too although it is a fair walk to the station.

Once in town you will be walking everywhere anyway. Capitol Bikeshare will rent bikes to you if you have helmets.

That's what we did. Stayed at a hotel in Alexandria and walked 5 minutes to the metro. We never used the car during our stay. You can't beat it.

Don't drive your car into DC.

I'd recommend driving to Ballston and parking in one of the garages there. Catching the orange line in Vienna and taking it all the way to DC is somewhat of a hike.

Park at the White House public parking garage. It's free.

I actually found several lots in the middle of DC that would allow me to reserve a spot for as little as $10-$20.

The big question is would it be doable to travel into the heart of DC around 1-2pm on a weekday?
