re: Parents of the OT: Did you tell your kids the truth about Santa and if so, at what age?

Same. I"ll take it further and add that our kids never believe in the tooth fairy, or easter bunny either but that doesn't mean we don't do something around both events w/o inserting mythical content though.

Welp it didn't go as planned....he wasn't ready and started crying. It was like I destroyed part of his innocence that day. Nervously, I blurted out "but the Easter bunny is still real." Don't think he believed me.
My dad told me when I was very young, way younger than your son. It pisses my mom off to this day

Same. I do treats for all my nieces and nephews also. Just like birthdays. Fun without creatures sneaking in your house

Those of you who never let your kids believe in Santa, was it for religious reasons?
Posted on 12/5/19 at 5:07 pm to Tiger1242
No, I simply wanted to tell my kids the truth. I’m very Catholic and my wife is atheist and we agreed on this matter 100%.

My daughter(now 12) came home from school in the 4th grade and asked me straight up about it. She said other kids in school were telling her there was no Santa. I told her the truth about it and I think it took away some of her joy at Christmastime.

We are just gonna let them believe as long as possible
This. Let them be kids as long as possible. Real life sucks enough when they grow up so let kids be kids as long as possible.

Just did this.
My 11 year old (10 at the time) looked me in the face and straight up asked if he was real. I could not lie.
She took it pretty well.
She helps us do Santa for the 5 yr old now.

He may have been in 4th grade, idk, but yeah I regret it now. I was a new parent at the time.

My kids are college and high school age and very clearly know better but my wife refuses to say it out loud. I think my oldest wishes she still didn't know

So my wife did the letter from Santa where he answers a bunch of questions that only you would know. He was around 7-8 . I told her he was acting concerned that he wasn’t real . Well she kept up the you have to believe stuff .
One day he basically corners me and says look Dad is he real or not . You’ve always told me never lie and on and on . I had to tell the truth . He looked at me and said I guess no rabbit or fairy either . He was pissed and so was my wife . Sheesh

How does that game even work?
You convince your kid that a stuffed elf that doesn't move watches them all day and then flies back to the north pole every night after they go to sleep. Then you have to remember to move the stupid thing to a diffrent place each night before they wake up so it seems like it's not just a stupid stuffed elf. And when you forget to move the stupid stuffed elf, you have to lie to your kid on why. Great idea.

No they do not at 5 -7. That is like the literal peak Santa stage.
Now that I think back. Mine started question about 7. By 8 the jig was up.
"Daddy, this is what I want for Christmas."
I think the first sentence she ever put together as a toddler was, 'Daddy, I want..."

Wait, what truth about Santa?

He doesn't really live at the North Pole.
He said screw all that ice. Has a nice place down in Costa Rica these days.

What was your reaction when you found out about this one?

I think I figured it out around 10. It takes away some Christmas spirit, but I was the oldest child so I thought hell yeah I’ll keep “believing” for as long as I can. All about racking up those presents.

Dang, Camden...I though I was the only one with that kind of spread! Mine are 20,18,13,5.
The oldest two just kind of figured it out and didn’t see it as lying to them. They understood the magic that the believing brought them and wish they could go back to not knowing. We didn’t have any sit down conversations...it just kind of evolved, I guess. I have a STRONG feeling the 13 year old also knows, but she isn’t saying and my wife probably isn’t ready for her to know. Everyone plays along for the 5 year olds sake.
