Painted kitchen cabinets?

I have honey oak kitchen cabinets and have never liked their color. I'm considering painting them, but Mr. 1999 thinks it's too much work and won't look as nice as wood grain ones to future buyers. I say I'll be doing all the work and nobody wants honey oak.

Here's a kitchen similar to ours:

I stained the cabinets in my master bath and after weeks of work, multiple trips to Lowe's, and ordering gel stain online, I finally got them somewhat presentable, but I'll never do that again.

What are the OT's thoughts?

Thinking I'd want something like this:

Countertops are gray bleck fleck stone, backsplash is tan tile, walls are terra cotta orange.

Oil based semi gloss paint.
If you go this route, paint them white.

If you like the wood look, just get a polyurethane stain and paint that on there.

I'd antique them, but that is a little more trouble.

Call around and see if you could get them professionally sprayed. You could paint the frames and inside yourself, but I'd remove the drawer fronts and doors and have them done.

The honey oak cabinets are the least of your worries.

Ironically it does look similar to 1999 in your kitchen.

Lol yeah I know it sounds weird but it's actually looks all right together. The countertops have a quartz-y look with bits of that orange rose stone, which is where the terra cotta comes in. Also some tan, which goes okay with the stone tile (tan color). Floors are wood medium color, not honey color so it looks especially odd with honey oak.
ETA: similar countertops

It's not enough work to justify your husband's whining.

Makes some sense since it was designed and built in 2005.

I have had the same honey oak cabinets for 23 years. I want to paint them a cream color and antique them. I have a brick floor and I need new counter tops. I'm thinking of chalk paint since I wouldn't have to sand and strip. I'm scared to start though.

I like the white/cream painted cabinets. We'll probably do ours soon

Yes my dad did chalk paint on his, I like the look but it sounds like work- and upkeep. Also my door style I don't think goes with chalk paint. Love the look though.

White cabinets will never go out of style. Put a coat of gladden gripper on them first, then a coat of semi gloss paint. No sanding needed. I've done it in 2 houses with no regrets. I actually just painted the outside and left inside the wood stain color.

I can't stand painted cabinets. Something about it cheapens it to me. Might as well buy some pine and paint them.

Not saying you can't update the look, but painting over a quality wood cabinet irks me. Like putting linoleum over hard wood floors. The painting/antiquing feels very "fad"-ish to me, but it is very popular.

I like the look of cream cabinets too. Only one small window, so I want to lighten the whole room (small kitchen). Also kind of liked grey or taupe on the cabinets but I'm afraid the room is too small and it might turn off buyers. May do cream on perimeter and a med dark gray on island.

Go with an off white and antique them. My in-laws just did this in the house they're building and it looks really nice. They stained the Island in a dark oak and it creates a nice contrast.

I think that's part of my husband's dislike too. He says once they're painted it's nearly impossible to go back.

And they aren't mdf, they're solid, at least the facings are, but I'm pretty sure they're pine stained honey oak color. This was a step above a starter home when we bought, there was nothing custom here. Resale market can't support a lot of upgrades and we're hoping to sell in a few years.

Exactly my opinion as well. Of course I used to think stainless steel appliances were a temporary fashion and the same for granite counter tops.

in the new house we built, we went with slightly off white shaker style cabinets, a light gray island, and white and gray (looks like marble) quartz countertops.... backsplash is white subway tile...

Pay a professional to come in, tape everything off, and spray them.
