I know there's a ton of Houston people on his site. What's your top three neighborhoods to live in between 300-400k or rentals for under $2500?

Preferably not too far away from the center of Houston in any direction.

I live in Cinco Ranch, kids in KISD
300k-400k is a good range, lots of inventory
Rental inventory is rising so $2500 for 4bd or 5bd is reasonable

Depends on where your job is, my wife works BW8 west side, I am in Pearland so our commutes are not bad

Determine your commute tolerance, Pick a school system, find a house - in that order

If you want to stay near Houston center and don't have kids yet, you will want to stay in the Loop

Montrose or the Heights

Houston RE is dropping a good bit, but I would hold off on buying for a little while longer if you can

Yup. No kids yet. We have a friend that lives in the heights and we liked that area.

I live in Midtown, which is close enough to work in the middle of downtown that I have walked to work before. The neighborhood has lots of restaurants and bars. Low 20s crowd. Rent for my single is $1300

No kids? Do you want a house? Townhome? You can rent a nice high rise apartment for that budget.

Cinco Ranch

is 30 miles from downtown Houston. People need to keep that in mind when they hear about that cheap real estate.

You can get a 4 bedroom home with a yard that is 20 miles from Manhattan for $350k.

Where will you work and what do you want? I'm under 30 (barely), but enjoy the burbs since I have a kid and will try to have more. Have friends through work that live in the heights. It's nice to grab a beer after work once in a while, but not for me. I personally didn't care for Cinco Ranch, but know tons of people that live out that way. People think I'm crazy for living in the Woodlands, but I'd rather commute and get the benefits of the community. Plus, I can take off at 3 most days if I wanted to and be home in 45 minutes.

If I was looking for a house and didn't mind commuting, it's Katy, Cypress, and the Woodlands I'd look at. Young rent house/apt. I'd look in the heights or maybe the galleria area.

If you have kids and don't mind the commute, Cinco is hard to beat. We currently live here, but will be moving to Kansas City at the end of March. More homes are coming on the market, and homes are sitting longer. You will have a good selection to choose from. The commute will get to you though. We are looking forward to moving to KC and having a 7 min commute.

All of this. I also live in Cinco and work in Pearland...The Katy/Cinco area is great. I moved from Lake Charles and love it. Good luck

Top 3 for sure... Again, Katy and Cinco are essentially the same thing.

When I lived in Houston, I lived at Shepherd and W. Grey in a condo close to the River Oaks area.

I I ever go back to Houston, I would go to that area again or to Montrose.
