Going on a family trip and trying to plan some outdoor activities. I know we want to do some white water rafting, tubing, zip lining, and ATV riding in the hills. Also looking for other ideas for activities that could be fun to do for family ranging from 8 years old to 60 years old.

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which white water rafting and tubing company to use? Which zip lining and ATV company are better to use? Google has many links for all sorts of companies offering similar services so I'm just trying to determine which ones are better or which ones to avoid. TIA

I would try and find a pancake place for breakfast. There's not many, but when you find one its delicious!!

Dunno about which companies, but the Nantahala is a very disappointing river if you are looking for something exciting.

Look at the Little Pigeon or the Upper Occoee.

For kids look at Cades Cove

Big Creek Expeditions in Hartford is great for white water rafting. About a 30-40 minute drive from Gatlinburg. No one on our raft had any experience and it was a blast. Our guide was awesome.

River Rage is a fun tubing company (in Townsend)and you end up @ Little River Barbeque, which is a great little eatery. I'll be there this summer, too. Have fun!

Watch out for the church groups. They invade that place during the summer. I would go during the other holiday seasons, Thanksgiving or Christmas or even mardi gras.

River Rat Tubing in Townsend is a ton of fun (as long as the river is up).

I would second hitting Cades Cove early.

In Pigeon Forge, there are some new low level alpine coasters that are very cool. Alpine Coaster

Try the Foxfire Mountain ATV rides...they are very cool Bear Crawler ATV - Foxfire Mountain They also have swinging bridges and zip lines.

What company did you schedule with? We will be there around the same time period.

Climbworks for zip lining. You'll pay a little more, but it's completely worth it!

Eta: also check out the alpine coasters. There's one in pigeon forge (which is definitely the best one) and there's also one right as you get into Gatlinburg that's really fun too. Both worth trying, for sure.

We took a big family trip to gatlinburg last May. We did the zip-lining/ whitewater rafting combo as well and had a BLAST. CLIMBWORKS killed it in every way. The guides were fun, super safe, and the views were incredible. I think it was about 2 1/2-3 hours. I have recommended this to several friends and they had a blast as well. The whitewater rafting was a blast as well. Our guide was big steve. Dude was like a sasquatch. Had a ton of experience and made everyone in the boat feel comfortable. We hit some pretty legit rapids and had a great time. As far as food goes, we hit Smokey Mountain Brewery like 3 times throughout the week. Their pizzas are some of the best any of us had ever had. Try "The Brewmaster." you won't regret it.

Agreed. If you want something different. I did the mountain biking and enjoyed it. If you bring your own bike it's like $25 for as long as you want to ride. If you want to do the zip line you better make sure you make reservations.

White water rafting is a while day trip so factor that in. It's a hell of a good time too.

Only meal I enjoyed there was what we cooked and Old Mill Cafe. We went there the last night ,if we would have went the first night we would have probably ate there 2 or 3 times.
