Maybe it's just my limited experiences, but I feel that most people become uncomfortable when someone in the room picks up the guitar, and I know most around here despise the type of guy who plays in the quad at major universities. While I am making a large generalization that could be completely off base, I am curious what you guys think. Thanks!

Have a friend who does this at every gathering. Now, he can play and he can sing very well. Thing is, it's the same 20 song menu. If I ever hear Never Been To Spain again it will be too soon.

Well, most of the time it's like the guy you see with the puppy at the coffee shop. Eye roll worthy most of the time.

I think to pull it off you have to be amazing at guitar, and be able to play almost anything, otherwise you are just an amateur that nobody wants to hear.

People get excited when my sister pulls hers out. But she also writes the music herself and sings her songs. And she's awesome

Usually it's like, we want to talk, not be at some loser impromptu concert

I absolutely hate when people play an instrument unsolicited. I don't care for music all that much, and live music is so loud and annoying. I honestly usually leave if someone starts playing an instrument, especially a guitar. I leave restaurants if someone shows up and starts playing music.

Unless your on a stage or being paid you should never play a guitar alone with a group of people watching you.

Unless you are in a band and I came to a specific location for the purpose of listening to your music, I don't want to hear you play.

Only when asked by women with whom you have a shot at having sex with.

Buddy of mine does, but only when hammered. He's not bad. Can't sing though.

But it is understood that if you stay long enough and are drinking with him in his house, he is pulling out his guitar. He gives zero fricks.

He was going to play. Stay or not.

My BIL has some Scottish friends that like to go out drinking. Last Christmas, while visiting there we went out "for a few pints" with the Scottish dudes.

After a few too many (those dudes chase pints of beer with tumblers of whiskey), one dude pulled a recorder out of his pocket and proceeded to play, then another dude whipped out a mouth harp and joined in. The rest of the Scots started singing, what about, I'll never know because I had a difficult time understanding most of what they said.

It actually was pretty cool for an impromptu concert but I imagine it would get old if they did this every time.
