Mostly done cardio focused workout programs in the past (Insanity, Insanity Max30)along with regular Army PT and trying to start lifting.

Used to lift back in high school (so many many moons ago)and am wanting to get back into it. Buddy recommended this and I started today. Just wondering any thoughts y'all might have.

I did it when I got back into working out after not doing it for a while. It's a good way to get much stronger in a short amount of time -- it'll help you move on to other things.

Scruffy started it recently. Currently 2 weeks in. It isn't too demanding with current schedule. Also, it's a good slow buildup. Scruffy hasn't really worked out in 8 years.

You do feel pretty stupid in the gym when you are benching 50 lbs though.

Scruffy has heard good things about it.

Great program to build strength. Your legs and arse will be ape like if you stick to it

Agreed. I'm starting at 115, and working out at a gym on post and I had by far the lightest weight of anyone

Smart move. Stick with it and it's a great way to get past being a beginner

Don't worry a out your starting weight. Trust the plan.

Yea, self-consciousness went out the window pretty quickly.

Figured sticking to the plan was the best bet.

It can be super quick at first, but when you get to heavy sets 5 sets of 5 squats takes forever.

I loved it because it got me hooked on standing strict overhead press; it's now my favorite lift. It translates better to other things, and I don't need a spotter so I've almost completely dropped traditional bench press.

As mentioned your legs will get crazy strong, and it's pretty nuts how much weight you can continually add on squats before you start to miss sets.

Is it worth it if you have been lifting for years but looking for something new?

Not sure. If you are already huge it may not be the best.

I started really light overall. 115 on bench (wasn't difficult) and 135 on squat. Kept the 65 lb starting weight for barbell rows.

I can see it becoming increasingly difficult though as the weight moves up, seeing as he advises adding 5 lbs per workout.

I went from squatting 170 and really struggling to squatting 245 5 x 5 in a matter of weEks. Then didn't lift at all for 7 months because of lazy then this January I started back easy at 185 and three weeks later I was back up to 245. Now up to 265 after only 6 weeks. I'm 5"7 and 185. I'm not following a strict stronglift routine now but I'm doing all of the core lifts

I'm doing my own variation of 5x5 with front squats and cleans thrown in there. And more dead lifts

Start with 3x3 or 5x5 with a moderate amount of weight if you've been lifting for a while.

DO NOT start with 85% of your normal 5 rep set. You'll plateau in a week or two. Not only are you working your muscles, but you're training them to be able to handle 5 straight sets.

I did it once when I was maxing probably 225-245. I wanna say I started with 135. It was a perfect amount. I'd caution to start even lower than you'd think for squats. 5x5 is insanely taxing on your entire nervous system. You really need to build up the required strength or you'll just hit a wall once you put any real weight on the bar.

How often should you mix in cardio with this workout?

I do a 10 min run before every workout. Mainly for warmup more than anything.
