Read this post and let it sink in before going down the path of building on your own.

What is your budget? I spent about $1500 on lumber and materials and built a set for my kids that was much bigger and sturdier than anything I could have purchased in that price range. If money isn't an issue, then the rainbow sets are pretty sweet.

The biggest gripe with getting all together IMO is the wood, it's a cedar that is supposed to weather well and is lighter but would be better if at least certain pieces were a stronger type of wood. If you're handy and have the time, the kit/plans may be the way to go for something long-term.

If you build your own, then treat it like a hobby; because it will take quite a bit of time.

I just put together one of the rainbow sets, with help from Dad, and it took us two full weekends.

ETA: And I just remember that Dad was working on it during the week while I wasn't around.

I'm not very handy at all but I built one myself with a kit that I purchased from Lowes that required me to buy wood. The kit comes with all of the dimensions for the wood and Lowes will cut the pieces for you. I simply followed the step by step instructions and had the whole thing complete over the course of 3 weekends. I had never built anything like that before or since then and it is still standing after 10 years.

I did one for my kids over a weekend, probably took about a case and a half of beer, it's not that hard, and you don't need all of the fancy hardware, approach it like building a deck or a fence, except make sure there are no sharp metal edges exposed and you might have to do some planing/sanding in some areas

One more important detail if you go the Toys R Us route, I've put two of them together, and NEITHER had the wood labeled out of the box. On both occasions we had to measure and label all the wood pieces ourselves before putting it together.

And I'll second the missing pieces & unaligned drill holes.

Pay someone to install for you!!

I'm starting to look at these too

I'm pretty handy and my Dad is a carpenter, so I think we could build one pretty easily, just time is something that I'm lacking at the moment

We put one together for my brother's kids. It was was very similar to that. It was a kit that came with everything. Only took 1/2 a day or so to complete. Buying your own materials and building it yourself is probably cheaper, but it'll take a lot longer and be a headache I'm sure.

Wrote a check to Backyard Adventures about 4 years ago and haven't looked back. Both kids have enjoyed the hell out of that thing spending many an hour on it.

It even holds my fat arse up and is just as solid as the day they put it in.

Just make sure the bottom pieces are placed on brick pavers or the soil moisture and your weed eater will tear it up.

I'll admit I've had a little animosity over my 3 year old not loving the play set as much as I think he should.

Build your own out of treated lumber. By far better and cheaper. Google detailed play systems.
