I went out the other night with friends and had a few drinks. We were all settling up our bar bills at the end of the night and I laid a couple of twenties on top of the bill. My two friends got change back and I didn't. I said "Which one of these is mine?" She said "Oh I just put the change in the jar". I figured it in my head and it worked out to a pretty large tip. Larger than what is appropriate. I told her that was okay; I know I would have given it to her anyway.

My question is this: Shouldn't she have given ME the money and let me kick it back to her if that's what I wanted to do? Instead of just taking it without giving me the option?

I don't understand why she did this with my tab and nobody else's? What is the appropriate protocol on this?

TIA

What was your tab and how much was the change?

Truthfully she probably read you as the kind of person that wouldn't say anything and she was right.

Yes she should have given you the change thereby giving you the chance to feel like a big boy while tipping the pretty lady.

Now let's settle in for a 20 page shitshow of a thread.

I waited tables for a little while and never assumed anything was a tip. You wouldn't believe how many people leave 50 or 75 cents as a tip on a $40 lunch. Mostly ~50 year old fat white women. That's my stereotype for a bad tipper.

Of course she should have given YOU YOUR money and not decided to take it as a tip. But do you know why she did it? Because when she did it, you (like a puss) told her it was okay.

Probably because she knew you'd let her take your money.

How much was the tab?

$35 tab. No big deal... $27.50, and it becomes a much larger tip.

What's worse is the places that you have to pay the tip before the service is provided. Like if you are getting food delivered and paying with a card. They ask if you want to add a tip. But what if it takes 6 hours to get your food? And if you don't tip, it's not like the delivery guy is going to want to grab your order first.

The worst are places that charge you a tip when you call in and pick up food

How much was tip and how large was the table? If you were over 6 or 8 people this may have been policy. Some places I believe may add tip if breaking a table up more than 3 tabs?

Was the waitress hot?

She absolutely should have given you the change. There is never a circumstance where it is ok for a server to take more than the bill without being explicitly given a tip.

If they have a policy, it is usually 20% and it goes on the bill.

I think sometimes it's implied

If the bill is 55 and I give you 70 in cash where I could have just as easily given you 60 instead, then I think that's an implied tip.

Yes. My two friends flirted with her more than I did. But they're both single and I'm not.

She definitely got kind of embarrassed by the whole thing. She blushed and was trying to dig the money back out of the jar when I told her not to bother with it. I think she got the message that I wasn't real happy with her tactics but I didn't make a big deal of it.

Op doesn't want to tell us the circumstances so I'm guessing he wanted his $5 back on his $35 bill

This, or it's made up entirely, which I think is more likely.
