hypothetical: Did Operation Eagle Claw have a chance of succeeding?

Recap: The Iranian hostage rescue mission aborted after a mishap at the refueling site destroyed a helicopter and one of the refueling aircraft, and caused several casualties.

Would it have worked otherwise? This plan had a lot of moving parts and it seems to me if the Iranians had mounted any kind of defense at all the outcome would have been in serious doubt. All such operations are high risk, but this one seems moreso than most

Meal Team 6 checking in...no, coordination between the various units involved was complete dog shite.

That's expressly why JSOC exists today.

Unfortunately, no. Every service wanted a piece of the action and lift capability (rotary and fixed wing) was still not sophisticated enough to support an operation over the distances that would be covered.

I doubt we have any real current or former operators on the OT. And even if we did, we'd never know it.

Yes, it had a chance but small one. To me, the biggest problem/issue was the helo pilots and the helicopters used. They used helos with known MX issues and pilots that were not properly trained. The perfect storm...flew into dust storm at night with super low vis and aircraft started breaking. Bunch of the crews turned back. Also...the helo comm plan was shite. When they broke up after flying into dust storm, they didn’t know who was doing what.

I do not believe it would have succeeded. Our overall military readiness was severely lacking at that point in history, and it was exposed when three of the eight helicopters could not even survive the trip to the staging area without mechanical failures.

Agreed, but this was a logistical/transportation issue, not an operational one. If SFOD-D had made it to Tehran they would have achieved a degree of tactical surprise and may have even liberated some of the hostages. But the plan to move them to a nearby soccer stadium (secured by Rangers) would have been a nightmare. And the rotary wing exfil from the stadium would have been dicey at best. Agree that we should have mounted an effort but our lift capabilities were lacking at that time.

This debacle is one of the main reasons the Osprey exists today.

There was heavy R&D to design something to fit a mission like this bc nothing we had currently was capable.

At the time they tested a modified a C130 for STOL to attempt a second rescue mention.

“Operation Credible Sport was a joint project of the U.S. military in the second half of 1980 to prepare for a second rescue attempt of the hostages held in Iran. The concept included using a Lockheed C-130 Hercules airlifter modified with the addition of rocket engines to make it a short take off and landing (STOL) capable aircraft able to land on the field within a soccer stadium in Tehran. Operation Credible Sport was terminated when on 2 November, the Iranian parliament accepted an Algerian plan for release of the hostages, followed two days later by Ronald Reagan's election as the U.S. president.”

“The resulting XFC-130H aircraft were modified by the installation of 30 rockets in multiple sets: eight forward-pointed ASROC rocket motors mounted around the forward fuselage to stop the aircraft, eight downward-pointed Shrike rockets fuselage-mounted above the wheel wells to brake its descent, eight rearward-pointed MK-56 rockets (from the RIM-66 Standard missile) mounted on the lower rear fuselage for takeoff assist, two Shrikes mounted in pairs on wing pylons to correct yaw during takeoff transition, and two ASROCs mounted at the rear of the tail to prevent it from striking the ground from over-rotation.”

The OT could put together a couple of ODAs from the lunch thread alone.
