Give me your honest opinion about buying a BMW 325i 2006 with 160,000 miles and the cost of repairs.

Is it worth it?

Is it worth what? It's worth something. How much depends on a lot of factors not included in your post.

3 series
10 years old
160,000 miles

I mean do you have to ask? There are far better options for the money. Just depends on how much you value being able to say "I drive a BMW" which seems to be what you're going for here.

If it were free, that's too expensive.

Random ten year-old BMWs are to be avoided.

My thoughts are sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

I wouldn't pay over 7-10k for sure, but honestly I wouldn't buy it to begin with

No, I have the info I needed answered. It is 4000. It is owned by a friend. I simply want the opinion about owning that specific car with 160k miles and thoughts on the repair costs on that specific car.

I will not be driving it. I don't want to own it.

If your friend treated it like a baby, was the only owner, has complete maintenance records, never wrecked it and it has no issues, it might be worth a gamble if you really like it.

It will probably have problems and it will be expensive to repair.

Is this a joke?

No one in their right mind would purchase a 2000s BMW with 60,000 miles, much less 160,000! BMWs are for leasing only. Once you are past lease mileage, the problems and expenses pile up faster than it makes sense to deal with.

Not a mechanic but no damn way I'd buy that car. You're looking at over $1k a year in maintenance IMO.

Unless you are handy with a wrench, have a cheap mechanic, or have a spare car, I'd stay away. That's right when 3 series start to go through a lot of trouble. 160k to 200k is where a lot of big ticket items are going to hit. I took an old e36 through it, and now I have an e46 with 190k that is just about over the hump. It's shite you don't think about. Say for example, your oil pan gasket is about shot at 160k. You have to lift the engine out to replace it. Your evaporator is about at the end of it's life, too, and that's a fricking nightmare to replace. Also, your windows regulators will break once a year.

I can't say anything bad about how they drive, though. That's what keeps me with them. You'll get called a 30thousandaire and people will automatically assume you're a prick, but whatever.

How much money do you have to set aside every month for repairs?

Here are the issues with my 2004 325 and these are all common complaints on BMW forums:

Multiple windows broken (replaced multiple times)
Both key fobs broken(not easy to put a new battery in and 150 to replace)
Key lock cylinder subsequently went out
The power lock/hazard light module is broken
Valve cover gasket leaky - Leaks a pint of oil every 1-2 months
Instrument cluster went out - would have been 1k+ for BMW to replace, just took one from a junker but now the tamper light is on.
Replaced the fuel pump

It is fun to drive though

shite I'll sell him mine for 2500 and it's only got 130,000 miles on it
