OT MEchanics - AC Cooling only in Drive

Wife's vehicle having AC issues. 2011 GMC Acadia. AC cools only when driving. When at a standstill for a light not cooling.
What's the damage I am looking at?

could be compressor, obstruction, or refrigerant related. Hard to tell without actually seeing it

What should I try before bringing to mechanic? Freon recharge kit? Compressor kicks on when in park in the driveway. Seems the issue is when in D and not moving.

Before you take it to the mechanic, try adding coolant. My car has done that before and turns out I just needed coolant.

Coolant levels are fine. Checked that last night.

I had this issue a few years ago and it turned out to be a short in the car's computer system.

Electric fan or mechanical?
Had a similar problem with a Honda Accord. Turned out the electric condenser fan motor was not working. Maybe check that, if yours is electric too?

Honestly no idea if mechanical or electronic. The fan does engage when the ac compressor kicks on.

Make sure your AC fan comes on in park when you set Max A/C. If it doesn't it could be a bad fan. It would work while driving because the condenser is cooling but with a bad fan the condenser does not cool when not moving and the AC doesn't work. If the compressor physically engages I would say you have freon because most are designed to not engage when freon is low. Also freon is in a sealed system so if it's low it means you have a leak.
Since it runs at times, I would think problem would be more electrical than mechanical.

I agree with your point that if it is low there is a Freon leak. My next question would be do the recharge kits actually seal leaks as they claim? Is it worth trying a recharge kit?
If it is electrical any idea what kind of damage I am looking at. Of course the warranty expired in April.

A charge kit won't hurt you unless you fill it into the red on the gauge that comes with it. I think for $25 it can't hurt to add it. I also know that you can get cheap AC checks in most areas. If the freon don't work you can do that.
(and to the people cringing at us using the term freon, I know the difference between R-12 Freon and R-134a refrigerant, freon is just easier to type and people know what you mean, and it will always be a cement truck to me.

vacuum leak but more than likely its the cooling fan. Either your fan is bad or the electrical relay control for it is out.

The compressor is tripping off on low RPM when you are not in drive. As you idle, the RPM drops down to a lower level and trips off the compressor.
AC compressor is probably failing.
