Not a lawyer, but if I was just graduating law school, I would look hard at joining the FBI. Interesting, important work, and you get to retire after 20 years on a great pension. GF's brother is one, and he's been on a dive team, worked security for a Super Bowl, and is now stationed at a US embassy in a foreign country.

And if you're interested in that gig, DSS all the way as another option. They love lawyers too.

Sounds like those victims were getting some poor representation.

Do you think it's easier for someone just out to make money on the plaintiff or defense side quickly? I'm talking getting above maybe 75-80k

Eta: many of the top firms in BR I know aren't paying that to associates in their first few years right now

I never studied it in law school, but since ive been practicing I really enjoy Disability work. It's nice to help people who really need it, although you'll see plenty of clients who are just lazy and are looking for handout. Plus, it's nice to not have some a-hole opposing counsel trying to ruin your case. And getting that check from Uncle Sam is real nice too.

If I could do it over again...

I'd get an undergraduate degree in a technical science field ( ie: geology, engineering, etc ). Then I'd go to law school and get the law degree. After finishing law school I'd go work for a big company in something related to my undergraduate. Then in 5 years parlay that out to a big law firm job or freelance.

First, I don't care what he does. Not that I don't want him to do well, just that I'm not truly trying to convince him to avoid plaintiff's work. It's a job. Pursue it diligently and fairly and I don't care what someone does.

Second, depends on where you are as to getting jobs in the defense side. If you went to a decent law school, did decently well and live in a fairly populated area, it's probably 50-50 shot at each side. Obviously if you struggled in law school or live in a more rural area, you're going to end up doing plaintiff's work, most likely.

I did some p side employment work while trying to build up some L&E chops at a boutique for about a year. I hated it, but other people might love it.

I see nuisance value cases settled all the time at nuisance value, so someone is doing it.

Not defensive just didn't want you to think I was bashing plaintiff's attorneys in a serious way. I mean, it's true I have bad run ins a lot, but they're necessary and it's just for fun.

The only attorneys I really despise as a class are the plaintiff-side lender liability attorneys. There aren't many because there is no money in it, but holy shite it's obnoxious.

I don't like auto stuff, but what little I've done wasn't miserable. Most of my ID work is subrogation for sizable property loss, so that's a little more interesting to me, although I'm sure a lot of people would think it's more boring than injury or death cases.

I appreciate upending a shitty injury claim from time to time, but I'm glad I don't do it regularly. If your dad's firm does more than just personal auto ID, which I'm guessing they do if they have 14 people, I'd probably do it.
