I'm pretty happy in my practice area, but if I had to do it over again, I would specialize in something like tax or ERISA.

I've heard ERISA is a nightmare and you can make a killing if you're specialized in ERISA

Complex statutes and regulatory stuff will always have demand, you just have to make sure you pick something that isn't on a list of legislation to be massively overhauled (or prepare to learn the changes).

FLSA on either side is gold.

Plaintiffs work if you really want to make some money. I had great mentoring and a road map when I started and it helped.

But don't expect to make bank right away and you will have to do plenty of shite work to pay the bills, all part of the experience.

It's probably easier to tell you what I wouldn't do.

Plaintiff's law of any kind
Tax
Family
Probably not T&E

I do Tax, Trusts and Estates. I enjoy it.

I'm too dumb for tax. I do some T&E on occasion for one partner, and I enjoy some of the more dramatic stuff, but I couldn't make a practice out of it.

I just had an accounting degree. I did better in tax classes in law school so I just headed in that direction.

Why would you not want to do plaintiffs work? Seems like easy money.

Not a lawyer, but if I was just graduating law school, I would look hard at joining the FBI. Interesting, important work, and you get to retire after 20 years on a great pension. GF's brother is one, and he's been on a dive team, worked security for a Super Bowl, and is now stationed at a US embassy in a foreign country.

Insurance defense is probably 10% of my work and primarily relates to one specialized insurance company. I rarely handle any liability work and when I do it either settles quickly on account of my client's low litigation risk tolerance or is clearly frivolous and beaten back easily.

What I've seen in my prior work is about 80% dubious 20% legit on the liability front. I've never seen a truly injured person get jacked around in a case I've personally been involved with, but then, I don't consider someone who rear ends someone and has an unfavorable police report with 10k in chiro specials seeking 80k in generals to be "truly injured," either.
