for an applicant. And does the length of time matter? Does a guy being unemployed for 6 months look substantially worse than somebody out of work 3 months? Just curious, since a lot of people seem to be in that boat right now.

In my experience on both sides, I think it probably depends on the industry. In an industry going through some upheaval, it's pretty normal. If you've got a gap in employment in a normal market, you just need a narrative that puts people at ease as to why you were either (a) let go or (b) quit without a job.

The bigger question is why is their a lapse in employment (of any significant period).

Company wide layoffs?
Fired/resigned?
In jail?
Took a year off to travel?
Stay at home parent?

Obviously you can see some are more telling than others.

It all depends on why you are out of work. It can look bad if you are steady looking for work for six months and you haven't gotten a job, because it makes you look undesirable. You will really need to sell yourself at the interview.

I've always wondered how they view men who spend time unemployed and become stay-at-home dads and then try to re-enter the workforce. It has supposedly been more common since 2008.

I have currently resigned my position to do some extensive overland travel.

When I return, I will list my usual company on my resumé as contract work.

Unlike most lies, this company has existed off and on since the 80s, I do occasionally do contract work for them, and we maintain an office building even when not in operation.

It may look bad, idk.

I know a couple attorneys who did it. Both went back to work. One with a firm, the other for the state legislature. Both seem pretty happy with the move (and return).

Obviously you're not going to get back on partner track most of the time, but seems like if you're in practice for long enough to nail down a reputation and some expertise, you could do what you wanted and probably come back and land a gig as of counsel or the like, often with a solid firm.

I've found that a lot of large firms who have small to medium sized offices in places like Atlanta/Dallas have totally abandoned normal legal hiring practices, and as a result are much more flexible about picking up people like this in non-traditional associate/partner roles.

If you just lie and say a parent or child got sick and you needed to take time to care for them, you should be good as long as the real reason isn't verifiable.

I just wrote "self employed" on mine because I had money, no bills, and just did random shite whenever I wanted to buy something. They've asked about it, and I told them about what I did for self employment. I was also starting college during that time. Haven't had a problem yet.

Is this why you post pretty much around the clock on here and obviously live on the Internet? Because you've been sitting on the couch for 6 months?

it can be a pretty big negative, but if there is a good explanation its not a show stopper.

Why is it a negative at all? Seems like someone without a job is more motivated to find one and can start whenever.

Busted. Actually I'm self employed and shite runs itself most of the time. If I had a boss he would fire me because I'm one slacking SOB. Fortunately I'm the boss man.
