interesting that you say this...I have a fossil slab that contains both a straight one and a coiled one side by side...didn't know they were related.

It's a prehistoric cephalopod. The fossils are known as baccalites.

It's not bacculites because bacculites have convoluted septae, meaning 1) they're ammonites and 2) different branch of cephalopods

Ammonites are spiral in general. Bacculites I thought are not.

BTW, are you at LSU?
