I don't know the mineral makeup, but those are fossilized prehistoric squid...I think they are called orthoceras or something like that...

Thanks for the info, that is correct. This is another garage sale find today for $2. Looks like this piece is worth about $50 or so.

man, that is a sweet deal for two bucks...I have seen a number of these and can tell you, that one is beautifully prepared...
